Lance Sergeant 2326, 1st/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish). Died, aged 26 years on the 26th November, 1916 in France. Son of Charles and Lizzie Anderson, of The Nest, North Stoke, Oxon. Buried at St. Venant Communal Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France, grave reference II. K. 3.

Note: An extract from "The London Gazette," No. 30156, dated 29th June, 1917, records the following:-"The King has been graciously pleased to award the Decoration of the Albert Medal of the First Class in recognition of the gallantry of Lce. Cpl. Charles Henry Anderson, late of the 1st/14th Bn. of the London Regt., who lost his life in France in November last in saving the lives of others. On the 28th Nov., 1916, Lce. Cpl. Anderson was in a hut in France with eleven other men when, accidentally, the safety pin was withdrawn from a bomb. In the semi-darkness he shouted a warning to the men, rushed to the door, and endeavoured to open it so as to throw the bomb into a field. Failing to do this, when he judged that the five seconds during which the fuse was timed to burn had elapsed, he held the bomb as close to his body as possible with both hands in order to screen the other men in the hut. Anderson himself and one other man were mortally wounded by the explosion, and five men were injured. The remaining five escaped unhurt. Anderson sacrificed his life to save his comrades."

Private 129662, 72nd Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment). Born 18th November, 1888 in Bath, Somerset and killed in action, aged 28 years on the 1st March, 1917 in France. Son of Edwin and Louisa Mary Baggs, of 3605, Knight Rd., Vancouver, British Columbia. Commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Private 237459, 204th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Born on the 2nd May, 1879 in Rosshire, Scotland, he died, aged 36 years on the 11th July, 1916. Son of Roderick Campbell, of Ardross, Alness, Ross-shire, Scotland, and the late Isabella Campbell. Buried in the Toronto (St. John’s Norway) Cemetery, Canada, grave reference range 6. Sec. 6. 20.

Ordinary Seaman J/47092, H.M.S. Fortune, Royal Navy. Killed in action, aged 22 years at the Battle of Jutland on the 1st June, 1916. Son of Thomas and Ann Jane Jackson. Born at Lytham, Lancashire. Buried next to the Chapel at Farsund Cemetery, Norway.

Note: H.M.S. Fortune was sunk on 1 June 1916 at the Battle of Jutland, under command of Lt Cdr F G Terry. About 11:30pm she came under heavy fire from German battleships, including SMS Westfalen. Hits from the secondary armament of Westfalen caused overwhelming damage and she went down on fire with 67 men. One man was rescued. The wreck site is designated as a protected place under the Protection of Military Remains Act 1986.

Sergeant 51510, 70th Battery, 34th Army Brigade, Royal Horse and Field Artillery. Born in Kew, Middlesex and enlisted in Hounslow, Middlesex he died on the 4th October, 1917 in France and Flanders. Buried in the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, grave reference IX. F. 16.

Note: Commonwealth War Graves Commission spells his surname Pursell.

Gunner 1257927, 4th Trench Mortar Battery, Canadian Field Artillery. Born on the 4th March, 1889 in Dumfries, Scotland, he died on the 28th September, 1918. Buried Bourlan Wood Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France, grave reference I. D. 18.

Rifleman 3844, 1st/5th Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade). He enlisted in London and was killed in action on the 9th October, 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, Pier and Face 9 D.

Note: On the Kew Garden Memorial Rifleman Woolley is listed as being a Corporal and a member of the Essex Regiment, while the Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists him as being a Rifleman and a member of the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade).

Possibly Private 240906, 2nd/6th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Born in St. Martin’s, Birmingham and enlisted in Birmingham, he was killed in action on the 21st March, 1918. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France, Panel 18 and 19.

Or Private 201656, 2nd/7th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Born in Birmingham he died, aged 29 on the 25th February, 1919. He is buried in the Birmingham (Lodge Hill) Cemetery, grave reference Screen Wall. B10. 9. 661A.

Corporal 9900 V, South African Medical Corps, attached First City/Cape Town Highlanders, South Africa Forces. A South African, he died aged 36 years on the 22nd June, 1944. Son of William G. and Beatrice Last, of Letchworth, Hertfordshire. He was buried in the Assisi War Cemetery, Italy, V, D, 12.

Note: On the Kew Garden Memorial Corporal Last is listed as being a member of the 6th South African Division, while the Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists him as being a member of the South African Medical Corp attached First City/Cape Town Highlanders.

Sergeant 919401, (W. Op.) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died, aged 25 years on the 2nd July, 1943. Son of William Duncan Graham Menzies and Jessie Marguerite Menzies, of Ealing, Middlesex. He is buried in Sleaford Cemetery, Lincolnshire, grave reference Sec. A.A. Grave 143.
