over Sussex; he managed to bale out but his parachute failed to
open. Son of Lt.Col Leonard and Margaret Crofts of Waverley. Cemetery:
All Saints' churchyard, Tilford, SE corner.
Note:
Although the official details are that his parachute failed to open
there is an eyewitness account of the combat (Alf Rogers, who was
a young boy with his father, and who is now in Australia) who confirms
that his parachute did open, but the Bf109 returned twice to fire
on Peter Crofts whilst descending in his harness. Alf states that
this was the only time he saw this happen (he obviously was an eyewitness
to many of the dogfights in the area, living in Punnets Town in
East Sussex). He is quite sure of what he saw, but does not know
what happened to the pilot as he disappeared below the tree line.
He did visit the crashed Hurricane, which buried itself, nose first
in the ground, the wings having sheared off just before it crashed.
There is also a monument to Peter Crofts by the roadside in Dallington,
near where he landed.
