EARTHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorials are to be found in St. Margaret Parish Church, Eartham. There is an illuminated list in a frame kept in the Church for both wars, plus a memorial for the 18 Old Boys of Great Ballard School, who died in 1939-1945. The School is still active and is situated next door to the Church. There is also single memorial tablet to an Officer who won the VC. In 1900 and was subsequently killed at Suvla Bay in 1915.

Sergeant G/978, 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Killed in action at Arras 25th July 1917. Aged 27. Son of Henry & Ellen Arnell of Pear Tree Cottage Donnington. Born in Hunston and enlisted in Chichester. Included on Chichester City and Donnington Church War Memorials. Buried in Monchy British Cemetery.

Corporal 9036, 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. 5th Division. Killed in action 13th October 1914. Son of Henry & Ellen Arnell of Pear Tree Cottage, Donnington. Born in Chichester and enlisted in Portsmouth. Commemorated on The Le Touret Memorial

Corporal G/1055, 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Killed in action near Arras 3rd July 1917. Aged 22. Son of George & Ellen Goble of Hungerdowm, Fontwell. Born in Aldingbourne and enlisted in Bognor. Included on Aldingbourne Parish Church War Memorial. Buried in Monchy British Cemetery.

Gunner RMA 8577(RMR/1C/92), H.M.S. 'Good Hope' (Reservist), Royal Marine Artillery. Lost with the Armoured Cruiser at The Battle of Coronel Islands off Chille 1st November 1914. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea.

Petty Officer 1st Class 119317 (RFR/PO/A/1802), Torpedo Instructor (Reservist), H.M.S. 'Black Prince', Royal Navy. Lost with the Armoured Cruiser at The Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Aged 50. Husband of Mrs Bridget Mears of 6, Madeira Road, Streatham, South London. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial Southsea.

David Carlisle Ridley

Ordinary Seaman P/JX/282456, H.M.S. 'Cossack', Royal Navy. Lost when the Destroyer foundered west of Gibraltar after Being torpedoed by U-563 in the North Atlantic four days earlier on the 23rd October 1941. Aged 19. Son of Vice Admiral Sir George Thomas Carlisle Parker Swabey KBE. CB. DSO. and Lady Swabey of Eartham. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial Southsea

TIDY

Stoker Petty Officer P/K/64130, H.M.S. 'Polyanthus', Royal Navy. Lost when the Flower Class Corvette was torpedoed by a U boat in the North Atlantic on the 20th September 1943. Aged 37. Husband of Mrs Daisy Tidy of Hambrook near Chichester. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea.

MILBANKE, V. C.

Sir John Penniston, 10th Baronet

Lieutenant Colonel Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Yeomanry. Killed in action at Chocolate Hill, Suvla Bay, Gallipoli 21st August 1915. Aged 42. Won the Victoria Cross at Colesberg in South Africa 6th January 1900 serving with the 10th Hussars. Son of Sir Peniston Milbanke DL. JP. & Elizabeth Milbanke of 19, Manchester Square, London. Commemorated on The Helles Memorial, Gallipoli. London Gazette: 'On the 5th of January 1900, during a reconnaissance near Colesberg, Sir John Milbanke, when retiring under fire with a small patrol of the 10th Hussars, notwithstanding the fact that he had been seriously wounded in the thigh, rode back to the assistance of one of the men whose pony was exhausted, and who was under fire from the Boers, who had dismounted. Sir John Milbanke took the man up on his own horse under a most galling fire and brought him safely back to camp.'

Lieutenant, 10th Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in Italy 6th April 1945. Aged 20. Son of Lt General Sir Balfour Oliphant Hutchison KBE. CB. & Lady Audrey Hutchison of Aldeburgh, Suffolk; Julian his brother also died during the war. Buried in Ravenna War Cemetery, Italy

Second Lieutenant, 10th Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in Benghazi Libya 23rd January 1942. Aged 20. Son of Lt General Sir Balfour Oliphant Hutchison KBE. CB. and Lady Audrey Hutchison of Aldeburgh, Suffolk; Andrew his brother also died during the war. Buried in Benghazi War Cemetery, Libya.

Alan Norman

Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Killed in action in Normandy 5th August 1944. Aged 22. Son of Norman Frederick Hugh & Dorothy May Mather of Alverstoke Hampshire. His brother Michael Hugh Lushington Mather (M.C., Royal Artillery) also fell in Germany in 1945. Buried in Hottot-Les-Bagues War Cemetery, Normandy.

Lieutenant, 'A' Squadron, 107th Regiment (5th Battalion, The Kings Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster), Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in Normandy 8th August 1944. Aged 21. Son of John Aubrey Brooking Snell and Mrs Madge Etta Snell of Wareham, Dorset. Included on the Wareham Town Memorial at St. Martins. Buried in Banneville-La-Campagne War Cemetery.

Richard Strangeways

Flying Officer, No 5 Fighter Squadron (Curtis Mohawks), Royal Air Force. Died in a flying accident in India 19th February 1943. Resident of Storrington. Included on Storrington Parish Church War Memorial Buried in Maynamata War Cemetery, India.

VAUGHAN

Lieutenant Royal Navy, H.M.S. 'Curacoa'. Lost with the Anti Aircraft Cruiser when she was accidentally rammed and sunk by the SS 'Queen Mary' off the west coast of Ireland 2nd October 1942. 338 men drowned. Son of Arthur & Evelyn Vaughan. Husband of Vivienne Vaughan of Whitechurch, Dorset. Aged 28. Commemorated on The Chatham Naval Memorial
