The memorial is in the form of a stone cross bearing the names of nine local men by name and unit in alphabetical order. There are three burials in St. Andrews Churchyard but only one of these is on the Memorial.

Nelson Percival

Stoker 1st Class K/23664/PO, HMS “Hampshire”¸ Royal Navy. Lost when the Cruiser was mined off the Orkneys 5th June 1916. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, MR.3.

BROCKHURST

James William

Stoker 1st Class K/23378/PO, HMS “Tipperary”, Royal Navy. Lost when the Flotilla Leader was sunk during the night action of the Battle of Jutland 1st June 1916. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial MR3

Private 49207, 4th Reserve Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Died at home 5th June 1918. Aged 18. Son of John & Lucy Cooper of 47, Gates Drayton, Oving. Born in Littlehampton and enlisted in Brighton. Buried in St. Andrews Churchyard, Oving.

Walter Haliburton Routledge

Captain, 1/4th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. 15th Indian Division. Died in Ramleh, Palestine, 9th April 1918. Aged 21. Only son of The Rev. Walter and Elizabeth Louisa Crick of Oving Vicarage, Oving. Born at Arundel. Educated at Magdalen College, Oxford. Buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Palestine

Stoker 2nd Class K/52192, HM Paddle Minesweeper “Ascot”, Royal Navy. Lost when the ship was torpedoed by a U-Boat off the Farne Islands 10th November 1918. Aged 18. Son of Mr E.G. & Mrs Blanche Cross of The Poultry Farm, Oving. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial

Son of Henry & Eliza Ferrett of 180 Orchard Street, Chichester. Born in Oving. Buried in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval

Leading Stoker K/13688/PO, H.M.S. “Invincible”, Royal Navy. Lost with the battle cruiser at the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. Commemorated on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Southsea

William Charles

Private 8248, 17th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action 16th October 1918. Aged 25. Son of James & Rosa Hoare of Ruffs Cottage, Oving. Born in Oving & enlisted in Brighton. Formerly with the London Regiment. Buried in Montay – Neuvilly Road Cemetery, Montay.

Leading Stoker K/17624/PO, HMS “Britannia”, Royal Navy. Lost when the Battleship was torpedoed off the West African Coast 9.th October 1918. Buried in Freetown (King Tom) Cemetery, Sierra Leone.

Captain, No 92 Squadron (S.E.5’s), Royal Air Force. Died in a flying accident 7th April 1918. Husband of Mrs Dorothy England(remarried) later of Streatham.
