SOUTHWATER WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be found adjacent to the village surgery in Lintop Square, Village Green, fairbank Road, Southwater, Horsham, West Sussex. It takes the form of a brick base, topped by a stone plinth mounted on which is an obelisk; the whole stands on a stone surround. At the top of the front face of the obelisk is a wreath with a bronze plaque set below and below that on the face of the plinth is an incised dedication. The memorial was first unveiled 7 September 2008 by the Lord Lieutenant of West Sussex. There are 29 names listed forWorld War 1 and 11 for World War 2.

Lieutenant, H.M.S. "Exmouth," Royal Navy. Died at Mudros from a self-inlicted bullet wound 22 July 1915. Born 2 October 1891, enlisted 15 September 1904, Sub-Lieutenant 30 july 1912, Lieutenant 30 July 1914. Applied for Royal Flying Corps April 1914. Buried at sea. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 5.

Note: Court of inquiry found that he committed suicide with a view to avoiding the disgrace of Court Martial for improper conduct for which he anticipated he would be tried.

Corporal CH/14856, H.M.S. "Formidable," Royal Marine Light Infantry. Killed when his ship was sunk by torpedo from German submarine U24 off Portland Bill, in the English Channel, 1 January 1915. Aged 24. Born 16 November 1890 in Lower Walmer, Kent. Son of William Fuggles (late Colour. Sergeant, R.M.L.I.) and Mary E. J. Fuggles, of Christ's Hospital, Horsham, Sussex. Telegraph Messenger before enlisting. Religious denomination Church of England. Enlisted 2 October 1905 in London. Height 5 feet 4 inches, fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes. In the 1901 census he was aged 9, born Kent, son of Anne M Kennard (a widow), resident Carrs Cottages, Easteds Lane, Horsham Rural, Horsham, Sussex. No known grave. KENNARD, ARTHUR, Private, No. 8557, 2nd Battn. The Hampshire Regt. yr. and only surviving s. of the late Edmund Arthur Kennard, of Hartfield, TunbridgeWells, Master at Ipswich Grammar School (who d. 13 April, 1891), by his wife, Annie M. (Cairo Cottage, Southwater, Horsham), dau. of the late George Greenfield ; b. posthumous at Hartfield, co. Sussex, 21 July, 1891 ; educ. Southwater Council School ; joined the 1st Hants. Regt. at Portsmouth, 1 Jan. 1910, going direct to Londonderry till the Autumn, and then to Aldershot, where he was transferred to the 2nd Battn. for foreign service in the autumn of 1911 ; served Wynberg, South Africa ; Mauritius and Mhow, Central India ; came home suffering with malarial fever and was unable to accompany his regt. to the Front in March, 1915, but went out to the Dardanelles with a draft the following July. He was killed in action at the Dardanelles, in the great charge at Krithia, 6 Aug. 1915. On this occasion, out of the 900 who went into the action, only 250 returned.
