The Church of Holy Trinity is fairly modern (1843); the Memorial is inside, set in a fine stained glass window on the East wall. There are seven men from World War 1 and one added for the Malayan Emergency of 1949-50.

COTTINGTON George
Private GS/846, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action at Richebourg L’Avoue 9 May 1915. Son of Charles & Mary Ann Cottington of Upper Dicker. Reservist. Born in Chiddingly. 21 years service with the Dorsetshire Regiment 1891-1912. Included on Hellingly Memorial. (Not included in SDGW Part 40 or the Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial Panels in Chichester Cathedral). Commemorated on The Le Touret Memorial
FUNNELL William John
Private G/7287, 13th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 39th Division. Killed in action during the German Spring Offensive 22 March 1918. Aged 27. Son of Mr & Mrs Alfred Funnell of “The Mount”, Lower Dicker. Born in Hellingly and enlisted in Eastbourne. Included on Hellingly Memorial. Buried in St. Emille Valley Cemetery.
KEMP Thomas J
Corporal L./9893, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Killed in action at the Battle of Loos 25 September 1915. Aged 18. Son of Mrs Caroline Mitchell later of Frog Firle, Alfriston. Born in Hellingly and enlisted in Eastbourne. Resident of Upper Dicker. Included on Hellingly Memorial. Commemorated on The Loos Memorial
MILHAM Charles
Private G/3460, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division Killed in action at the Battle of Loos 25 September 1915. Aged 32. Son of William & Emma Milham of Mill Farm, Chiddingly. Husband of Mrs Eunice Milham (remarried) of Hellingly. Born in Hellingly and enlisted in Hove. Included in Chiddingly Memorial. Commemorated on The Loos Memorial
PEARMAN Charles William
Private 48773, 1st (Reserve) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Home Command. Died at home 5 January 1918. Aged 19. Son of Charles & Martha Pearman of 6, Elm Cottages, Upper Dicker. Born in Kings Cross and enlisted in Eastbourne. Buried in Gravesend Cemetery, Kent.
SHOESMITH Frederick Hubert Walter
Private TF/3647, 1/5th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 48th Division. Died of wounds in base hospital at Etaples 5 September 1916. Aged 19. Son of Ernest Edward & Sarah Jane Shoesmith of “The Nurseries”, Upper Dicker. Born Upper Dicker and enlisted in Hastings. Included on Hellingly Memorial. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery.
RUSSELL Gordon William
Lance Corporal 845, 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers 18th Division. Taken prisoner and died in captivity 28 May 1918. Aged 30. Son of George Monro and Augusta Charlotte Russell of Upper Dicker. Born in Upper Dicker and enlisted in Westminster. Included on Hellingly Memorial. Buried in Annois Communal Cemetery.

WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY A.D. 1914-1918

A single, inset piece of glass names one ma who died during th Malayan Emergency. The date of his death has been tramscribed as 1949 but was actually 1951. His grave has been photographed and appears here.

Private 22382276, 1st Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Killed in action at New Caledonia Estate, Batu Arang, Malaya 22 October 1951 (memorial states 1949). Aged 19. Born 18 February 1932. Buried in Cheras Road Cemetery, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Row 19. Grave 1060.
