WEST DEAN (EAST SUSSEX) WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial in the Church at West Dean consists of two small brass plaques, flanked by the flags of Great Britain and England. There are only two names on each plaque, and the inscriptions contain quite a lot of detail. The lower plaque was added in November, 1997. [Note: There is also a West Dean in West Sussex]

LAWRENCE Maurice Theodore

Private SD/2110, 12th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Secondary Regiment, attd. 116th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Inf). Born in Seaford, he enlisted in Bexhill on Sea, Sussex. Part of the British Expeditionary Forces, he was killed in action 3rd September, 1916. Age 18. Son of the Reverend George William Augustus Lawrance and Catherine Elizabeth Lawrance, of West Dene Rectory, Seaford, Sussex. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, The Somme, France, Pier and Face 7 C.

HOLTER Charley Frederick

Private 25040, 7th Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Killed in action 18th April, 1917. Age 21. Son of Thomas William and Sarah Ann Holter, of Exceat, New Barn, Seaford, Sussex. Commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France, Bay 7.

Note: The date of death on the church memorial differs from the CWGC.

CASEY Joseph

Gunner 15743, W Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. Born at Seaford, Sussex. Believed died from wounds 24th November, 1918. Age 33. Son of John and Alice Casey. Buried in the Churchyard of All Saints, West Dean, Sussex, South East of the Church.
