The
Avon Dassett war memorial is to be found on the main road south, west
of the village, opposite a bus shelter. It takes the form of a small,
stone, Celctic cross on a plinth stanmding on a paved square. It was
re-dedicated on Remembrance Sunday 1968. There are 3 names for World
War 1 and 2 names for World War 2.

Private
17779, 10th Btn, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) Ernest was
the son of George and Anne Bloxham, Avon Dassett. He was the husband
of Ethel Lacy Bloxham, Tudeley Rd, Paddock Wood, Kent. The 10th
Btn Queen’s West Kent Regiment was part of the 41st Division. The
Division fought the Battle of Menim Road Bridge, one of a series
of engagements that made up the 3rd Battles of Ypres, between 20th
and 25th September 1917. Ernest died on 21st September 1917, age
33. He is buried at Larchwood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Flanders.

(Herbert
Bernard Cooper) Private 12370, Household Cavalry & Cavalry of the
Line, 18th Queen Mary’s Own Royal Hussars. Herbert was the son of
George and Emma Cooper, Avon Dassett. Records show that Herbert
was born in Leamington Spa and enlisted at Scarborough. George’s
residence is recorded at Avon Dassett. The 18th Queen Mary’s Own
Royal Hussars was part of the 1st Cavalry Division. The 1st Calvalry
Division fought in the 2nd Battle of Ypres between 22nd April and
25th May 1915. Herbert was killed in action on 13th May 1915, age
25. Herbert’s name is inscribed on the Ypres (Menim Gate) memorial. |

Thomas
Joseph |
Captain
Thomas Joseph Wilfred Weld MC and Bar, Lovat’s Scouts, 1st King’s
African Rifles. Thomas was the son of Wilfred Weld, Orchard Lodge,
Avon Dassett. Thomas died on 18th November 1918 , age 25. Thomas
saw action near Nambanje area, Tanzania. Thomas is buried at grave
III A 15, Nairobi South Cemetery, Kenya. Thomas’s name is also commemorated
inside St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, Avon Dassett. |

James |
Private
3968209, 1/5th Btn, Royal Welch Regiment James was the son of Walter
and Violet Kempley, Sibford Gower, Oxfordshire. 1/5th Btn Royal
Welch Regiment was part of the 53rd Infantry Division, The first
units landed at Arromanches on 25th June 1944. James died on 30/6/1944,
age 24. He is buried at grave III G12 , St Manvieu War Cemetery,
Cheux, Normandy. The cemetery contains the graves of those men who
died in battles from mid June to the end of July in the region of
Tilly-Sur-Seulles and Caen (CWGC). |

Lieutenant (Pilot) 42291, RAF. Pyers was the son of Colonel Percival
Worrall CBE, DSO, MC and Agnes Worrall, Avon Dassett. Pyers fought
in the Battle of Britain with 85 and 136 Squadrons, RAF. During
1941, Pyers was a member of 136 Squadron, RAF (‘The Woodpeckers’)
equipped with Hurricane 11Bs). From March 1942, the squadron was
in India where it was responsible for providing air defence for
the Calcutta area. Pyers died 8/6/1942, age 21 Pyers is buried at
Plot O, Row J, grave 21, Calcutta (Bhowanpore) Cemetery, Kolkata,
India. His name is also commemorated inside St. Joseph’s R.C. Church,
Avon Dassett. |
