World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is in Manor Lane on the village green at the junction with Bandbury Road, Kineton. It takes the form of a three stepped base surmounted by a plinth and a column, with a royal coat of arms carved on it, with a ball on top with a cross affixed to the summit; the inscription is to be found on the sides of the plinth. It was unveiled 10 July 1921. There are 38 name slisted for World War 1 and 10 names for World War 2.

ASKEW George Edgar
Rifleman R/8209, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 8th Battalion. Son of Joseph and Matilda Askew, Kineton. Born Northend, enlisted Stratford, residence Kineton. The 8th Battalion was part of the 14th (Light) Division that landed in France in May 1915. George died of wounds on 30th September 1915, his name is inscribed on Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, Belgium.
ASKEW Horace S
Private 138264 Machine Gun Corps, 62nd Battalion. Son of Joseph and Matilda Askew, Kineton. The 62nd Battalion was formed on 9th March 1918 and was attached to 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division. The Division fought in the final advance in Picardy between 17th October and 11th November 1918. Horace was killed on 3rd December 1918 and is buried Le Cateau Communal Cemetery, France
ASKEW Oliver J
Private 25304 Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 2/6 Battalion. Son of Joseph and Matilda Askew, Kineton. Born Northend, enlisted Nuneaton, residence Kineton. The Battalion was part of the 61st (2nd South Midland Division). The Division landed in France on 21st May 1916. Oliver was killed in action 20th March 1918, on 21st March 1918 the Division took part in the Battle of St Quentin. He is buried at St. Souplet British Cemetery, France.
BALDWIN George Harold
Petty Officer J/10360 (Devon) Telegraphist, Royal Navy, Submarine K4. George was the son of George and Mary Baldwin, of Kennels, Kineton. Born 26 August 1894 in Peterborough, Northamptonshire. He was drowned on 31st January 1918, age 27, when HMS submarine K4 collided with HMS K6 and HMS K7 during fleet exercises in the North Sea. K4 was lost with all hands. Enlisted as a school boy 26 August 1912 for 12 years. Height 5 feet 5 inches, chest 36½ inches, light brown hair, grey eyes, fresh complexion. Name inscribed on Plymouth Naval Memorial.
BROWN Jack
Private 267626 Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 11th Battalion. Son of John Brown, Houndshill cottages, Stratford. Enlisted Warwick, residence Ettington. The battalion was part of the 24th Division, landed in France 30th July 1915 and fought the Battle of Vimy Ridge between 9th and 13th April. Jack was killed in action on 25th April 1917, his name is inscribed on Arras Memorial, France.
COLLETT John Ernest William
Lance Corporal 13313, Worcester Regiment, 3rd Battalion. Son of John and Mary Collett, Market Place, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Bromsgrove, residence Kineton. Baptised 14 June 1896 in Kineton. The battalion was part of the 25th Division which landed in France between 25th and 30th September 1915 and concentrated in the Nieppe area. John died on 11th December 1915 and is buried at Prowse Point Military Cemetery, Belgium.
COLLINS John [Earnest]
Private R/8208 King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 8th Battalion. Son of Joseph and Mary Collins, Bridge Street, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 14th (Light) Division which landed in Boulogne in May 1915. John died of wounds on 21st November 1915, age 20. He is buried at Lissenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium.
COLEMAN John [George]
Corporal 47310 Royal Horse Artillery, 146th Bde, H.Q. Husband of Mrs F Coleman, Mill Lane Cottages, Kineton. Born Leamington, enlisted ‘Warwickshire’. John died of wounds on 3rd May 1915, age 28. He is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery extension, Nord, France.

possibly Charles Moody Matthews ELLICK Lance Corporal 3260, King’s (Liverpool Regiment) 10th Battalion. Husband of Ethel (nee Woods) Ellick (married 26 December 1912 in Liverpool), son of John and Lavernia Ellick, Liverpool. Enlisted Liverpool, residence Liverpool. In the 1911 census he was aged 25, a General Clerk, born St Peters Rock Ferry, Cheshire, resident with his widowed mother, Lavina, who was Curator of the Royal Instituion, in Royal Institution, Colquitt Street, Liverpool. The battalion was part of the 3rd Division. Charles died of wounds on 7th July 1915, age 29. He is buried Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France.
FISHER, DCM Percy Watkins
Lieutenant, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) 22nd Battalion. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct medal (D.C.M.). Son of Joseph and Mary Fisher, Bridge Street, Kineton. Educated at King Edward V1 School, Stratford. The battalion was part of 2nd Division which landed in Boulogne in November 1915. The Division fought on the Somme from 1st July 1916 until 13th November 1916. Percy was killed in action on 12th September 1916, age 34. He is buried at Hebuterne Communal Cemetery, France.

Disitinguished Conduct Medal Citation [London Gazette 27 July 1916]:

278 Sjt. P.W. FISHER 22nd Bn.
For conspicuous ability. When his company had attacked and captured an enemy trench he organised the defence of a flank with great coolness and skill. When withdrawal was ordered he again displayed great ability, directing the various parties by the bearings of certain stars.

FISHER Raymond Wadhams
Captain, Northumberland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion. Intelligence Officer, HQ Army. Son of Joseph Fisher and Mary Fisher, Bridge Street, Kineton. Educated at King Edward V1 School Stratford. Promoted to Temporary Lieutenant 3rd October 1914. Raymond served in the South Africa campaign. The battalion was part of the 28th Division which landed in Salonika in October 1915. The Division fought on the Doiran front. Raymond was killed in action 13th September 1916, age 34. He is buried at Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece.
FREEMAN Albert John
Private R8207, King’s Royal Rifle Corps, 8th Battalion. Son of Mr. Henry Freeman, Banbury Street, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 14th (Light) Division which landed in Boulogne in May 1915 and fought on the Western front throughout the war. Albert was killed on 4th July 1915, age 18. His name is inscribed on the Ypres (Menin Gate) memorial, Belgium.
FREEMAN George
Rifleman S/1548, Rifle Brigade (the Prince Consort’s Own) 10th Battalion. Son of G Freeman, of Gas Works, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Warwick, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 20th (Light) Division which landed at Boulogne on 21st July 1915 and fought on the western front throughout the war. George was killed in action 5th October 1915. He buried at the Royal Irish Rifles graveyard, Laventie, France.
GARDNER George Frederick
Private 42708, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, 9th Battalion. (Formerly 056336 Army Service Corps) Son of Martin and Ada Gardner, Southam Street, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Rugby. The battalion was part of the 36th (Ulster) Division which landed in France in October 1915. The Division took part in the final advances in Flanders between 28th September and 11th November 1918. George died of wounds on 24th October 1918, age 22. He is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
GARRETT Oliver [Thomas]
Private G/29127 Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent) London Regiment, 1/20th Battalion. Born Kineton. The battalion was part of the 47th (2nd London) Division. Between 21st August and 1st September 1918, the Division fought in the Battle of Bapaume, the second Battle of the Somme. He died 1st September 1918 and is buried Rancourt Military Cemetery, France.
GREEN Kelynge
Lance Corporal 17862 Royal Warwickshire Regiment 11th Battalion. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Green, Bridge Street, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford, residence Kineton. The battalion formed at Warwick and landed in France on 30th July 1915 as part of the 37th Division. Between 21st March and 4th July 1918, the Division fought a German Offensive known on the western front known as ‘Operation Michael‘. Kelvnge was killed in action on 31st May 1918, age 24. He is buried at Chambrecy British Cemetery, France.
HARTLESS Geoffrey
(no other G. Hartless listed) Private 232514 London Regiment, Royal Fusiliers, 2/2nd Battalion. Born Shropshire, residence Lewisham. The battalion was part of the 58th (2nd/1st London) Division which landed at Le Harve on 22nd January 1917. Between 4th and 17th May 1917, the Division fought in the Battle of Bullecourt. Geoffrey died on 14th May 1917. His name is inscribed on the Arras memorial, France.
HORSLEY Joseph W
Lance Corporal G4198 Royal Sussex Regiment, 9th Battalion. Born Kineton, enlisted Arundel Sussex. The battalion landed in Bolougne on 1st September 1915 and was part of the 24th Division. Between 7th and 14th June 1917, the Division fought in the Battle of Messines. Joseph was killed in action 21st June 1917. He is buried Oxford Road Cemetery, Belgium.
HUDSON Charles Albert
Serjeant 2240, Warwickshire Yeomanry 1st/1st Battalion. Son of John and Ann Hudson, Longborough Glocester and wife of Lillian Hudson, Banbury Street, Kineton. Enlisted Warwick, The battalion was part of the 2nd Mounted Division. The Division returned to Egypt from Gallipoli in December 1915. The Division fought the Battle of Romani between 4-5th August 1916 in defence of the Suez canal. Charles died of wounds on 10th August 1916. He is buried at Kantara War Cemetery, Egypt.

probably William Keyte, Private 13101 Worcester Regiment, 4th Battalion. Born Alcester 1893, enlisted Redditch, residence Alcester. The battalion was part of the 29th Division which landed at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 25th April 1915. William was killed in action Gallipoli. His name is inscribed on Helles Memorial, Turkey.
LOUCH Frank
Private 5226 Royal Warwickshire Regiment 1/6th Battalion. Born Stratford, enlisted Leamington, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 48th (South Midland) Division. Between 23rd July and 3rd September 1916 the Division fought the Battle of Poziers Ridge, one of the Somme battles. Frank was killed in action on 18th August 1916. His name inscribed on Thiepval Memorial, France
MIZEN William John
[Listed as John William Mizen on CEGC] Sapper 108948, Royal Engineers, 92nd Field Coy. Son of Joseph and Mercy Mizen, husband of Lottie Mizen, Church House, Kineton. Born Monkton, Wilts, enlisted Kineton. The company was part of the 18th (Eastern) Division which embarked for France on 24th July 1916. The Division fought in the Somme Battles between 21st March and 4th July 1918. John was killed in action on 16th June 1918, age 35. He is buried at Ribemont Communal Cemetery extension, Somme, France.
MULLIS Herbert George
Private 13381, Royal Warwickshire Regiment 9th Battalion. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford. The battalion was part of the 13th (Western) Division which landed in Egypt in January 1916. From February 1916 the Division fought in Mesopotamia. Herbert died of wounds on 18th April 1916, in Mesopotamia. His name is inscribed on Basra Memorial, Iraq..
PADBURY Samuel
Private 21915 Royal Warwickshire Regiment 2nd Battalion. Son of William Padbury, Moreton Morrell. Born Kineton, enlisted Rugby, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 7th Division which landed in Zeebrugge on 6th October 1914. The Division took part in the Arras offensive between 9th April and 16th June 1917. Samuel died on 4th May 1917, age 29. His name is inscribed on Arras memorial, France.
PHILPOT Henry [John]
Private 10941 South Staffs Regiment, 7th battalion. Son of George and Edith Cooper, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Rugby, residence, Kineton. The battalion was part of the 11th (Northern) Division which sailed from Liverpool and landed at Suvia Bay, Gallipoli on 7th August 1915. Henry was killed in action on 9th August 1915, Gallipoli.
PLUMMER George Frederick
Serjeant 310254, Warwickshire Yeomanry 1st/1st. Son of Frederick and Hannah Plummer, Banbury Street, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Kineton, residence Kineton, The 1/1st was part of the Australian mounted Division. The Division took fought in the 3rd Battle of Gaza between 31st October and 7th November 1917. George was killed in action on 8th November 1917, age 36. He is buried at the Gaza War Cemetery, Israel.
PRICKETT Alfred [John]
Driver 614302 Royal Horse Artillery, 2nd/1st (Warwick) Bty. Born Lutterworth, enlisted Leamington. The 2/1st landed in Boulogne on 24th May 1917 as part of 158th Army Brigade Royal Field Artillery. From 16th July 1917 the Brigade fought in the Nieuport-les-Bains area. Alfred was killed in action on 20th July 1917 and is buried at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
ROBERTS William
Private 9038, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 2nd Battalion. Born Stoke Newington, enlisted Oxford, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of the 2nd Division which landed at Boulogne on 14th August 1914. William was killed in action 15th March 1916. He is buried at Tranchee De Mecknes Cemetery, Aix-Noulette, France.
ROUSE Denis Charles
Private 108427 Machine Gun Corps, 50th Battalion. (Formerly M/299406 Royal Army Service Corps). Son of Arthur Rouse, Kineton. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford. The battalion landed in France as 17th February 1917 as part of 17th (Northern Division). Denis died on 18th August 1918, age 19. He is buried at the Glageon Communal Cemetery, France.
SMITH, MC Douglas George
T/Lieutenant, King’s (Shropshire Light Infantry, 6th Battalion, Military Cross. Born Palma, Majorca. Son of Rev Franklyn and Marie Smith, Wesley House, Marazion, Cornwall. The battalion landed at Boulogne on 22nd July 1915 as part of 20th (Light) Division. Between 31st July and 6th November 1917 the Division fought in the 3rd Battle of Ypres, (Passchendaele). Douglas died of wounds on 6th August 1917, age 21. He is buried Dozinghen Military Cemetery, Belgium.
SMITH, MC Roderic Franklyn
Captain, King’s (Shropshire Light Infantry) 6th Battalion, Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Son of Rev Franklyn and Marie Smith, Wesley House, Marazion, Cornwall. The battalion landed in Boulogne on 22nd July 1915 as part of 20th (Light) Division. The Division fought on the Somme from 24th March until 20th April 1918. Roderick was killed in action on 28th March 1918, age 26. His name inscribed on Pozieres Memorial, France.
STRATFORD William
Rifleman S/6606 Rifle Brigade (the Prince Consort’s Own) 2nd Bt. Born Binton, enlisted Stratford, residence Stratford. The brigade landed at Le Havre as part of 8th Division. On 25th September 1915, the Division fought ‘Action of Bois Grenier’ a diversionary attack coinciding with the Battle of Loos. William was killed in action on 25th September 1915. His name is inscribed on Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

TIPPING Roland Walter
Private 242900 Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 15th Battalion. Husband of Mrs L Tipping, Alcester. Born Kineton, enlisted Stratford, residence Kineton. The battalion was part of 5th Division. The Division returned as to France from Italy in April 1918 and between 21st and 23rd August 1918 fought in the Battle of Albert, opening phase of the Second Battle of the Somme. Roland died of wounds on 24th August 1918, age 23. He is buried at Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt, France.
WHEILDON John
Serjeant 310360 Warwickshire Yeomanry, 1st/1st Battalion. Son of John and Margaret Wheildon, the Farmhouse, Gaydon. Born Gaydon, enlisted Kineton, residence Kineton. The 1st/1st was part of the Imperial Mounted Division. On 19th April 1917 the Division fought in the Second Battle of Gaza. John was killed in action on 19th April 1917. His name is inscribed on the Jerusalem Memorial.
WILKINS Victor John
Sapper 288525 Royal Engineers, 4th Field Squadron. Son of Ernest and Emily Wilkins, the Post Office, Kineton. V.J. Wilkins died on 3rd December 1918, age 20. Victor is buried Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. Kantara is located on the east side of the Suez Canal. During the war it developed into a major base and hospital centre (CWWGC).

Bombardier 70199 Royal Field Artillery, 92nd Battery. Son of Mrs S. Wilson, Bridge Street, Kineton. The 92nd Battery was part of the 29th Division. On 25th April 1915, the Division landed at Cape Helles, Gallipoli. Arthur died on 30th July 1915, age 21. He is buried Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Turkey

Corporal 5387629 Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, 7th Battalion. Son of Ernest and Winfred Adams, Kineton. The battalion was part of the 56 (London) Division. During the period 5th November to 9th December 1943 the Division fought in the Battle of Monte Camino, part of the German Bernhardt line. John was killed on 3rd December 1943, age 24. He is buried at Cassino War Cemetery, Italy
ALLIBONE Jack
Leading Aircraftsman 1418796, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Son of Ellen Maud Adams, Kineton. Died 17th November 1943, age 22. Buried Khayat beach war cemetery, Israel. The area of Haifa was of great strategic importance during WW2 because of its deep water harbour and airfield, RAF Aqir.
ANSTEY Frank Edward
Leading aircraftsman 1183196, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 28th September 1943, buried Heliopolis War Cemetery, near Cairo, Egypt.
BATCHELOR Thomas Albert
Lance Bombardier 7045747 Royal Artillery, 4th Maritime Regiment. Missing presumed killed 31st December 1944. His name is inscribed on Plymouth Naval Memorial
GARRETT Lester Elmer
Private T/210034 Royal Artillery, RASC. Son of Edward and Annie Garrett, Kineton. Died 23rd July 1945, age 34. Buried Labuan War Cemetery, Borneo, Malaysia.
GULLIVER Arthur Frederick
[Listed a A S GILLIVER on memorial] Private 5118148 Wiltshire Regiment 4th Battalion. Formerly Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Son of Arthur and Sarah Gulliver, husband of Ida Gulliver, Kineton. The battalion was part of the 43rd Wessex Division. In July and early August 1944, the Division took part in the Battle for Caen and the closing of the Falaise gap. Arthur died on 5th August 1944, age 31. He is buried at Banneville La Campagne War Cemetery, France.
LEWIS Jack
Lance Corporal 2356984 Royal Corps of Signals. Son of Harry and Ethel Lewis, Kineton. Died 25th September 1944, age 24, buried Castiglione South African Cemetery, Italy. The cemetery is located in mountainous country near the town of Castiglione dei Pepoli. During Autumn 1944 the Allies were attacking the German defensive positions nearby known as the Gothic line.
WATSON Thomas Aubrey [Sir]
Lieutenant 76647, Life Guards, 4th Battalion. Born 7th November 1913, son of Sir Charles Watson and Lady Watson of Westminster, husband of Lady Ella Watson, Newbold on Stour, Warwickshire. Died 10th January 1941, age 28. Buried Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
WATTS Alfred John
Corporal 525119 RAF. Son of Frederick and Kate Watts, Kineton. Alfred was on board the troopship SS Lancastria which was bombed by a JU 88 and sunk off St. Nazaire on Monday 17th June 1940. He died that day, age 22, and is buried at L’Epine Communal Cemetery, Ile De Noirmogtier, France.
WILLS Alec
Petty Officer, Stoker C/K 66410 RN HMS Picotee. Son of Joseph and Mary Wills, husband of Ellen Wills. HMS Picotee was a flower class corvette torpedoed by U-568 while on convoy escort duty on route to Iceland on 12th August 1941, age 34. Name inscribed on Chatham Naval Memorial.

TARTT Thomas G
Thomas G Tartt of the Rhodesian Horse who died at Mount Darwin S. Africa July 25 1897 aged 29 years. Thy will be done. Erected by his parents T and E Tartt. Thomas T Tartt was the son of Thomas and Eliza Tartt, of Kineton. He had two sisters Alice and Ann.
