information
Compiled and copyright © Linda Joseph 2016
Leamington Spa Holy Trinity is located in Beauchamp Avenue, Royal Leamington
Spa, and has several memorials within it. The first can be found at
the west end of the nave and takes the form of a highly detailed stained
glass window comprising three main sections with tracery above commemorating
World War 1 Victory. The centre section comprises two sets of three
lights, one set above the other, and depicts the entrance into paradise
with Christ surrounded by angels in the top set of three lights, above
lights depicting St George, St Michael and a host of angels. The left-
and -right- sections each comprise two lights: the left lights depict
War via heroic figures of the Middle Ages, Knights, Crusaders and Ancient
Britons above the words "War" and "Devastation";
the right lights depict Peace via allegorical figures of music, love,
prosperity and cord, together with depictions of nature and life, above
the words "Peace" and "Plenty". The tracery is equally
ornate and includes the words "Justice" and "Mercy"
above the War lights, and "Love" and "Joy" above
the Peace lights. The window cost around £1,050. raised by Congregation
and friends of Holy Trinity Church. and was dedicated by the Bishop
of Coventry circa 1920. Mounted on West Wall beneath the Victory Window
is a rectangular, nowy-headed brass plaque with incised lettering dedicated
to those who lost their lives in World War 1. THis was dedicated circa
1920 and list 41 names of those who died. On the east corner of south
wall is a hand-written roll of honour on parchmentr enclosed in glazed,
wooden frame with epitaph listing 11 men who have their lives in World
War 2.

2nd
LIEUTENANT ARTHUR JOWITT, 1st. BATTN. THE ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGT.,
was the son of the late Joseph Jowitt, of Tipping Street, Manchester.
He was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, on the 17th January, 1878, and
after a commercial education he enlisted as a Private in the Warwickshire
Regiment at the age of seventeen, and served through the South
African War, for which he received the Queen's medal with five
clasps. After serving in the ranks for nineteen years, 2nd Lieutenant
Jowitt received his commission in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment
in December, 1914, and was posted to the 1st Battalion. He went
with his battalion to Flanders for active service in the war with
Germany, and was killed in action on the 25th April, 1915, near
Ypres.
2nd Lieutenant Jowitt's Company Commander gave the following account
of the circumstances under which he met his death : "We were
to attack a wood : between us and the wood was a farm which we
were told was unheld. I was told to extend the men close to the
farm by the Commanding Officer, and did so. While doing so the
enemy opened on us from the supposed unheld farm. We ran to some
dead ground within twenty yards of their trench, and were under
cover. Your husband charged with his platoon, but they were all
killed except one man. He fell with his arms on the parapet of
their trench, and the men say that the Germans Pulled him into
their trench, but I did not see this myself. Am very much afraid
there is no doubt your husband was killed, as he was so very close,
and must have been hit more than once. A magnificent soldier,
officers and men were all devoted to him."
His Colonel wrote : "He was the bravest of the brave, if
he had to die he died as he would have wished to do—bravely
leading his men, who followed him everywhere."
2nd Lieutenant Jowitt married Ethel Sarah, daughter of William
Harwood, of Leamington Spa, and left one son--William Joseph,
born in December,
