IN SACRED MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WAR
| ADAMS | [George] Howard | Private
20240 Royal Warwickshire Regiment, 10th Btn. George was the son
of George Adams, Radway, Warwickshire. Records show that he was
born in Radway and enlisted at Kineton. The 10th Battalion was part
of the 19th (Western) Division which landed in France from 16-21st
July 1915. Between 20th and 25th September 1917 the 19th Division
fought the Battle of Menin Road Ridge, one of the Third Battles
of Ypres. Howard was killed in action on 21st September 1917, age
21. His name inscribed on Tyne Cot memorial, Belgium. |
| ASKEW | [Samuel] Thomas | Private
25159 8th East Surrey Regiment. Thomas was the son of Richard and
Matilda Askew. Records show that he was born in Northend and enlisted
Warwick. His residence is shown as Ratley in 1901 census. The 8th
Battalion was part of the 18th (Eastern Division) which landed at
Boulogne 2nd June 1915. The 18th Division fought in the Battle of
Ancre Heights, one of the Somme Battles, between 1st and 11th November
1916. Thomas died of his wounds on 11th November 1916, age 32. He
is buried Contay British Cemetery, France. |
| ASTELL | Edward | Private
12471 Ox and Bucks Light Infantry, 6th Btn. Records show that Edward
was born in Banbury and his residence was listed as Chacombe Oxfordshire.
He enlisted at Birmingham. The 6th Battalion formed at Oxford and
was part of the 20th Light Division that landed at Boulogne on 22nd
July 1915. The 20th Light Division fought in the Battle of Flers
Courcelette, the third phase of the battle of the Somme, between
15th and 22nd September 1916. Edward was killed in action on 17th
September 1916, age 27. His name is inscribed on Thiepval memorial,
Northern France. |
| GIBBINS | Maurice | Private
24555 Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment, 6th Btn. Records show
that Maurice was born Radway and enlisted Kineton. He was the Son
of John and Mary Gibbins, Radway. The 6th Battalion Queen’s Own
(Royal West Kent) Regiment was part of the 12th (Eastern) Division.
On 18th September 1918 the Division attacked the Hindenburg Line
at Epehy. Maurice was killed in Action 21st September 1918, age
21. He is buried at Epehy Wood Farm Cemetery, France. |
| GWYER | Alastair Grant | Born 10th May 1883. Captain 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers). Alistair was the son of Mrs Cecil Gwyer and the late Cecil Gwyer, Perthshire. He was gazetted 2nd Lt in January 1902; promoted Lieut in September 1903 and Capt in May 1908; subsequently retired and joined the reserve of officers, rejoining his Regiment on the out break of the European war. (Du ruvigny’s roll of honour) The 6th Battalion Dragoon Guards moved to France in August, September 1914. On 14th October the 6th Dragoon Guards was attached to the 2nd Cavalry Division. Between the 19th October and 22nd November 1914 the 6th Dragoon Guards fought in the 1st Battle of Ypres. Alastair was killed on 22nd October 1914 age 31. He is buried Wytschaete Military Cemetery, Belgium. He is commemorated on a plaque within the church, dates and spellings differ. | LINDON | John | L/Cpl
310206 1ST Warwickshire Yeomanry. Records show that John was born
in Radway and enlisted at Kineton. He was the son of Mr and Mrs
S.A. Lindon, Radway Grounds, Kineton. The 1st Warwickshire Yeomanry
was assigned to the Australian Mounted Division and fought in the
first and second Battles of Gaza and the Battle of Mughar Ridge
on 13th November 1917. Records show that John died of wounds on
12th November 1917, age 25. He is buried at Beersheba War Cemetery,
Israel. |
| NEWELL | Thomas [Charles Edwin] | Private
285295 Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars. Records show that Thomas
was the husband of Elsie Newell Daphne Cottage, Radway. He enlisted
in Oxford. The Queen’s Own Oxfordshire Hussars was part of the 2nd
Cavalry Division. Between 8th and 11th August 1918 the Division
fought in the Battle of Amiens. Thomas died of wounds on the 10th
August 1918, age 34. He is buried Villiers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery,
France. |
| WEST | [William] Robert | Cpl
1065 Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) 1/5th Btn. Records
show that Robert was born in Fenny Compton, and enlisted at Derby.
His residence is listed as Leamington Spa. The 1/5th Btn landed
in France on 25th February 1915 and formed part of the 46th (North
Midland) Division. The Division was sent to the Ypres Salient. William
was killed in Action 16th July 1915. His name inscribed on the Ypres
(Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. |

| McCLUSKEY | Thomas | Sergeant,
Flight Engineer, 1832010, 138 Squadron RAF, killed 1st June 1944,
age 29. Records show that Thomas was the husband of Margret McCluskey,
Radway, Warks and son of Peter and Margret McCluskey, Kelty, Fife.
He is buried at Bergen-Op-Zoom, War Cemetery, Netherlands. 138 Squadron
RAF equipped with Handley Page Halifax Bombers Mk II and was based
at RAF Tempsford, Bedfordshire. The squadron was assigned to special
duties and dropped Special Operation Executive agents. |
| PADBURY | Samuel Francis | Gunner
965564 Royal Artillery, 80 (the Scottish Horse) Medium Regiment.
Samuel was the son of Harry and Mary Padbury, Henley-in-Arden, Warwickshire.
Samuel took part in the Battle of Anzio which took place between
22nd January and 5th June 1944. He was killed on the 18th February
1944, age 26, and is buried at Anzio War Cemetery. |

CHAMBERS ESQ. SECOND SON OF THE REVD. THOMAS CHAMBERS BY MARY, DAUGHTER OF SANDERSON MILLER, ESQ. OF THIS PARISH, AND GRANDSON OF THOMAS CHAMBERS, ESQ OF STUDLEY IN THIS COUNTY. FOR MANY YEARS HE WAS ACTIVELY ENGAGED AS A SURGEON IN THE ROYAL NAVY. WITH A VIEW TO BE PROFESSIONALLY USEFUL HE VOLUNTARILY ACCOMPANIED AN EXPEDITION ON THE 28 JULY 1809 BY THE BOATS OF THE SQUADRON UNDER THE COMMAND OF SIR J SAUMAREZ AGAINST A BRIG AND SEVERAL RUSSIAN GUNBOATS AT FREDRICKSHAM, GULF OF FINLAND. THE ENEMY'S VESSELS WERE ALL TAKEN AFTER A SANGUINARY CONTEST. FOR HIS SERVICES ON THIS OCCASION HE WAS SPECIALLY THANKED IN THE ADMIRAL'S DISPATCH AND SUBSEQUENTLY RECIEVED A WAR MEDAL. DIED 6 AUGUST 1854 |
