273, 1/4th Battalion, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Killed in action 8th May 1915. Born Banbury, enlisted Banbury, residence
Shotteswell. Son of George and Annie Boneham, Shotteswell. Buried
at Rifle House Cemetery, Belgium.
The battalion was part of the South Midland Division; landed in
Bouglogne 30th March 1915. By 3rd April the Division had concentrated
near Cassel, north west France. |

19117, 1st Battalion, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.
Killed in action 23rd September 1916, Mesopotamia. . Born Shotteswell,
enlisted Oxford, residence Shotteswell. Son of Joseph and Jane Haynes,
Shotteswell. No known grave. Commemorated on Vasra Memorial, Iraq.
The battalion was part of the 6th Poona Division that served in
Mesopotamia throughout the war. |

action 4th October 1917. Enlisted Rugby, residence Shotteswell.
Son of Alfred and Elizabeth Norton, Ivy Cottage, Shotteswell. Buried
in Sunken Road cemetery, Fampoux, France.
The battalion went to France in March 1915 as part of the 61st (2nd
South Midland) Division. |

Killed in action 9th May 1917, aged 23, in Salonika. Born Little
Bourton Oxon, enlisted Banbury. Son of Ada J Prickett, Shotteswell.
Buried Doiran Military Cemetery, Greece.
The battalion was part of the 26th Division; moved to Salonika,
Greece on 13-26th November 1915. The Division fought in the Battle
of Doiran between 24-25th April and 8-9th May 1917. |

G/16735, 11th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action
21st March 1918. Enlisted Lincoln’s Inn, London. Son of
Isabella Starkey, 20 Perry Rise, Forest Hill, London. No known
grave. Commemorated on Pozieres Memorial, France.
The battalion was part of the 39th Division; landed at LeHarvre
March 1916. The Division fought in the Battle of Saint-Quentin,
France where the German army began their Spring offensive ‘Operation
Michael’ on 21st March, 1918.

Officer Cook D/L 13878, H.M.S. Courageous, Royal Navy. Died 17th
September 1939 when HMS Courageous, aircraft carrier was sunk by
U29 off the coast of Ireland with loss of 518 crew. Son of James
and Bessie Bramwell Gilbery; husband of Louisa Gilbert, Shotteswell.
No known grave. Commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

Light Infantry. Killed 30th March 1945, age 23. . Son of Percy and
Lillian Tuckey; husband Vera Tuckey, Banbury. Buried in Reichswald
war Cemetery, Germany.
In February the battalion was involved in Battle for the German
Rhineland including the Battle of Reichswald near Nurenberg which
took place in February /March 1945. |

7887533, 7th Royal Tank Regiment, Royal Armoured Corps. Killed 29th
May 1942. Place of birth and residence listed as Oxford. Buried
Knightsbridge war Cemetery, Acroma, Libya.
Knightsbridge, north of the main road from Benghazi to Tobruk was
a key position and a pivot on which the armour manoeuvred during
heavy fighting which commenced in late May 1942. |

Officer 160143, 77 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command, Royal Air Force
Volunteer Reserve. He was killed whilst a Flight Sergeant on a bombing
over Berlin in Halifax serial LK709 on 29th January 1944. Cause
of loss not established. His promotion to Pilot Officer was gazetted
on 14th March 1944. 778288 William Proffitt White (160143). No known
grave. Commemorated on Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
The squadron was equipped with Handley Page Halifax bombers and
flew out of RAF Elvington, Yorkshire. |
