Note: The Luton Roll of Honour gives military detail, martital status and an address that is noted as residence but is probably the address of the person notifying them. Addresses differ from that given on the Luton RoH, CWGC and census records. Names can vary between records and thus there may be conflicting entries by a name. Spellings differ between records. All this we have tried to indicate here.

SADDINGTON George Herbert
Sergeant 240289, 2nd/5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 28 September 1917 at 6:40 p.m. Born Coalville, Leics., resident Ellistown, Leics., enlisted Ashby-De-La-Zouch, Leics. Resident 58, Chapel Street, Luton. Married Annie Galton in the July to September Quarter 1915 in Luton. He was the son of Thomas and Louisa Saddington. George having been wounded earlier in the war when serving with the 5th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment was reposted to the 2nd/5th Battalion on his recovery. He was wounded during the attack on Polygon Wood on the 26th September 1917, and was taken to a hospital to the south of Poperinghe where he died from his injuries on the 28th September. Other sources show his place of residence as Ellistown, Leics. Buried in NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row D. Grave 1.

In the 1915 Electoral Register he was resident 2, Stanley Street, Luton. Attested 28 February 1917, aged 34 years 7 months, a Coach Painter by trade at Vauxhall Motor Works, Luton, married resident 2, Stanley Street, Luton, height 5 feet 7 inches, chest 35½ inches, fresh complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes. In the 1891 census he was aged 2, born Bedford, son of Azor and Mary E Savage, resident Beaconsfield Street, Bedford. Admitted to Harpur Trust Boys' School, Bedford, 2 December 1896, son of Azor Savage, of 13, Beaconsfield Street, Bedford, left 9 July 1902 due to ill health. In the 1901 census he was age 12, born Bedford, son of Azor and Mary E Savage, resident 19, Park Road West, Bedford. In Kelly's Directory, Bedfordshire, 1910 he was a shopkeeper, of 11, Park Road West, Bedford. According to the National Roll of the Great War - Section V - Luton:

SAVAGE, H. J., Private, 8th King's (Liverpool Regiment).
He joined in November 1916, and in the following March was drafted to France. He fought at Ypres, and was wounded and invalided home. On recovery he rejoined his fighting unit, and on September 11th, 1918, was reported missing. He was later presumed to have been killed in action on that date. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

He volunteered in September 1914, and in the following year was sent to France. He was engaged on important duties in the forward areas, being in action at the Battles of Ypres and the Somme. He was mortally wounded on August 22nd, 1917, and died on the following day. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

"Arcadian" when she was torpedoed and sunk on 15 April 1917 north east from the island of Milo (Melos), carrying reinforcements for Egypt. Aged 21. Enlisted Luton, Beds. In the 1911 census he was aged15, born Luton, an Errand Boy, son of William and Elizabeth Scoats, resident 70, Burr Street, Luton. He volunteered in October 1915; and at the conclusion of his training embarked for Egypt in April 1916. He lost his life when the ship in which he was sailing was torpedoed and sunk by enemy action in the Mediterranean Sea on April 15th, 1916. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

SCRIVENER, A. E., Sergeant, 4th Bedfordshire Regiment.
Volunteering in September 1914, he was sent to the Western Front in the following year. Whilst in France tin fought in many engagements and was wounded and invalided home. On recovery he served with his regiment for nearly two years and returned to France in 1917. He was killed in action at the Battle of Ypres on April 23rd, 1917, and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

SCRIVENER, A. W., Private, 2nd Royal Fusiliers.
He volunteered in August 1914, and was drafted to the Western Front three months later and saw heavy fighting in the Ypres salient and other sectors. Trans. (erred to the Dardanelles in May 1915, he took part in the second Battle of Krithia and was killed in action in June of that year. He was entitled to the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals

SEABROOK, A., Cpl., 7th Bedfordshire Regt.
He volunteered in September 1914, and in the following year embarked for the Western Front and took part in many important operations in that theatre of war. He fought in the Battles of Ypres. Arris and other notable engagements, and was wounded at Hill 60, and also at Givenchy. Rejoining his unit, he was killed in action on the Somme on September 23rd, 1918, and was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.

He lost his life on October 23rd, 1916, when his ship was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the Irish Channel, and was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

SWAIN, J. W., Private, Northamptonshire Regt.
He joined in August 1916, and two months later proceeded to the Western Front where he saw much service. He was wounded in the course of operations and rejoining his Battalion after recovery was taken prisoner on May 27th, 1918, during the German Offensive. Repatriated in January 1919, he died on September 18th of that year from the effects of privation and ill-treatment whilst a prisoner of war in Germany. He was entitled to the General Service and Victory Medals.

Volunteering in August 1914, be was sent to France two months lacer and was engaged in the fighting at La Basset and the subsequent engagements of Hill 60. Ypres, Loos and the Somme Offensive, during which he was killed in action on September 10th, 1916. He was entitled to the 1914 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals.
