MAIDS MORETON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 and 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The war memorial is situated on the nave wall inside the church of St Edmund, Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire and consists of four stone tablets inset into the wall. It was made by W.A. Forsyth of Oxford Street, London and Messrs Coles of Brackly, Northamptonshire and was dedicated and unveiled by the Bishop of Buckingham 30 June 1921. There are 12 names listed for World War 1 and 4 names for World War 2.

Lance Corporal 3887, 2/1st Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died of wounds 28 November 1916 in France and Flanders. Aged 35. Enlisted Aylesbury. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Bryant (nee Daniels) of Maids Moreton. Born about 1881 in Maids Moreton and baptised 10 Oct 1881 at Maids Moreton. Member of Maids Moreton Football Team buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Ffrance. Section O. Plot II. Row V. Grave 8.
JONES Arthur William
Private 12719, 6th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died of wounds 2 July 1916 in France and Flanders. Aged 25. Enlisted Oxford. Son of George and Eliza Jones of Duck Lane, Maids Moreton. Born about 1890 in Maids Moreton and baptised 9 February 1890 in Maids Moreton. Brother of Tom Jones (see below). Buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium. Plot I. Row C. Grave 23.
JONES Charlie
Private 12742, 6th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 7 October 1916 in France and Flanders. Aged 23. Enlisted Oxford. Son of George and Bessie Jones of 9. Main Street, Maids Moreton. Born Abt 1893 in Maids Moreton and Baptised 11 June 1893 Maids Moreton. Brother of Walter George Jones (see below). No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10A and 10D.
JONES Walter George
Sergeant 2263, 1st/1st Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 23 Aug 1916 in France and Flanders. Aged 28. Enlisted Aylesbury. Son of George and Bessie Jones of Church St, Maids Moreton. Born about 1888 in Maids Moreton and baptised 12 February 1888 in Maids Moreton. Husband of Nellie Jones (nee Pargeter) of Maids Moreton. Before World War 1 was Cabinet Maker and Carriage Cleaner at Wolverton Carrigae Works - LNWR. Was also a member of Maids Moreton Football Team. Brother of Charlie Jones (See above). No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 10A and 10D.
JONES Thomas aka Tom
Private 45609, 8th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment) formerly 31196, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 4 September 1918 in France and Flanders. Aged 18. Enlisted Bletchley. Son of George and Eliza Jones of Duck Lane, Maids Moreton. Born about 1899 in Maids Moreton and baptised 31 December 1899 in Maids Moreton. Brother of Arthur William Jones (see Above). No known grave. Private 266048, 2nd/4th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 2 November 1918 in France and Flanders. Aged 28. Enlisted Aylesbury. Grandson of Emma King of Duck Lane, Maids Moreton. Husband of Lily King of Wellmore Maids Moreton. Born about 1890 in Maids Moreton. Buried in Auberchicourt British Cemetery, Nord, France. Plot II. NICHOLLS William Herbert
Private 27790, 1st Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died on service 22 July 1917 in Mesopotamia. Aged 34. Enlisted Wolverton. Son of George and Grace Nicholls of 2 Main St, Maids Moreton. Born about 1883 in Maids Moreton and baptised 19 August at Foscott. Last Know Address was in Newport Pagnell. Before World War 1 he was a Grocers Apprentice. Buried in Baghdad (North Gate) War Centry, Iraq. Plot XX.Row K. Grave 13.
PARGETER George Edward
Private 16290, 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Died of wounds 2 November 1914 in France and Flanders. Aged 19. Enlisted Buckingham. Son of Willliam and Harriett Emma Pargeter of School Terrance, maids Moreton. Born Abt 1895 Maids Moreton and Baptised 12 May 1895 Maids Moreton. Nop known grave. PARGETER Frederick Ernest
Private 12721, 6th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Died in United Kingdom 4 April 1915. Aged 20. Enlisted Oxford. Son of Henry and Elizabeth Pargeter of Maids Moreton. Born Abt 1895 Maids Moreton and baptised 13 Jan 1895 Maids Moreton. Buried in St Edmund Churchyard, Maids Moreton, Buckinghamshire.
RAINBOW Arthur James
Private 10799, 5th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Killed in action 24 August 1916 in France and Flanders. Aged 28. Enlisted Buckingham. Son William and Mary Ann Rainbow (nee Pallett) of The Wheatsheaf Inn, Maids Moreton. Husband of Alice Elizabeth Rainbow of The Bakery, Maids Moreton. Born about 1881 in Maids Moreton and Baptised 12 February 1888 Maids Moreton. Last Know Address was in Padbury. Brother of Fred Rainbow (see below). No known grave. Shoeing Smith 754, Royal Buckinghamshire Hussars. Died on service 4 May 1915 in Egypt. Aged 29. Enlisted Buckingham. Son William and Mary Ann Rainbow (nee Pallett) of The Wheatsheaf Inn, Maids Moreton. Born Abt 1886. Last Know Address was in Maids Moreton. Before World War 1 was a Journey Manager of Butchers at Watlington, Oxon. Brother of Arthur James Rainbow (see above) Buried in Alexandria (Chatby) Military and War Cemetery, Egypt. Section C. WEBB Edward John
Corporal 1442, 1st/6th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died of wounds at sea on 15 Aug 1915. Aged 25. Enlisted Carnavon. Stepson of W H Wharton of Maids Moreton. Born about 1890 in Great Milton, Oxon. Husband of Webb/Wharton (nee Hedges) of Maids Moreton. Before World War 1 he worked in the gardens at Moreton Hall until 1909 when he moved to Wales. Became a Fireman and was a Gardener in Llandegai, near Bangor. No known grave. Commmemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Panel 77 to 80.

FRANKLIN James
Private 5952327, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Accidentally killed 10 October 1940. Aged 21. Born 30 January 1919 in Northamptonshire, baptised 22 June 1919 at Biddlesden, son of Benjamin James and Elizabeth Franklin, resident Biddlesden Road. Resident Buckinghamshire. Son of Benjamin James Franklin and Elizabeth Franklin; husband of Violet Lily Franklin, of Maid's Moreton. In the 1939 Register he was unmarried, a Plasterer, resident withn his father Benjamin Franklin (a widower), resident Foscottage, Maids Moreton, Buckingham R.D., Buckinghamshire. Buried in MAIDS MORETON (ST. EDMUND) CHURCHYARD, Buckinghamshire.
GIBBS Harold
Private 5955561, 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Captured at the Fall of Singapore 15 February 1942, died as a Japanese Prisoner of War 26 August 1943. Aged 29. Born and resident Buckinghamshire. Buried in KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY, Thailand. Plot 2. Row N. Grave 47.
STANLEY James [Woodward]

Corporal 421204, 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, Royal Armoured Corps. Died 8 August 1944. Aged 24. Born and resident Buckinghamshire. Baptised 5 October 1919 in Maids Moreton, son of Fred Woodward and Edith Annie Stanley. Buried in BANNEVILLE-LA-CAMPAGNE WAR CEMETERY, Calvados, France. Plot III. Row D. Grave 13.

Major 63144, 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, Royal Armoured Corps. Killed in action in Italy 18 January 1944. Aged 29. Born Gharial, India 1914., resident BuckinghamshireSon of Brigadier-General Bertram Fitzherbert Widdrington, C.M.G., D.S.O., and Enid Widdrington, of Felton, Northumberland. Also served with the Transjordan Frontier Force. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Buried in ASSISI WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot X. Row C. Grave 8.
