Barton
war memorial can be found within St Peter's Church, Barton. It takes
the form of a three light stained glass window with dedicatory inscriptions
for World War 1 at the base of lights one and three and a further inscription
at the base of light two covering the names for World War 2.

and is buried in St Peters Churchyard, Barton.

Died when poisoned by a gas shell on the Somme 30 November 1918.
Baptised 9 July 1899 in Barton. Son of John Francis and Rachel Rayner
(farmers), of Fuller’s Hill, between Gransden and Gamlingay,
after their son enlisted. In 1911 census he was aged 11, schoolboy,
son of John Francis and Rachel Rayner, born and resident Barton.
In the 1918 Electoral registers his address is given as Bird's Farm,
Barton. Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime,
France. Section S. Plot II. Row HH. Grave 24. |

26697, 14th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment who was killed in action
on Friday, 20th October 1916. Age 39. Born Trumpington, enlisted
Cambridge, resident Barton. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. G. Seeby,
of Church Lane, Trumpington, Cambs; husband of Annie May Seeby,
of Debden, Saffron Walden, Essex. Formerly 21425, Suffolk Regiment.
No known grave. Commemorated on the THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.

ROLL OF HONOUR.
BARTON.
The
late Pte. Charles Seeby, whose death was reported last week, was
a native of Trumpington. He joined the Suffolks on September 14th,
1915. Went to the front in August, 1916, and then transferred
into the Hampshire Regiment. He was killed instantaneously on
October 20th. Mrs. Seeby has received the following Ietter from
his Lieutenant: — “l am deeply grieved to have to
tell you of the death of your husband. He was in my platoon, and
we are very sorry to lose him. He was always chcerlul and keen.
He was killed by shrapnel and suffered no pain. We did all we
could for him. I am sorry to say I could not get his personal
belongings but it was in an attack, and we could do no more.”
