FRANK EDWARD,
Corporal, 12880, 4th Battalion, The Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex
Regiment). Eldest son of Harry Agger of 4 Market Hill, Cambridge,
Hairdresser and Tobacconist, died 13 November 1903, by his wife
Elizabeth Sarah, died 16 May 1896, dau of Robert Holder.
Born Cambridge 14 April 1892, educated Farningham and in the Higher
Education class, Aldershot (Sept 1913 - Feb 1914). Enlisted 1
January 1910, formed one of the bodyguard at Hyde Park at the
coronation of King George V, 22 June 1911. Served with the Expeditionary
Force in France and was killed in actionduring the retreat from
Mons 23 August 1914. At the time of his death he was in charge
of a squad of men guarding a railway bridge, at the small village
of Oburg near Mons, they were compelled to retire, and on reaching
their lines, Corporal Agger, who had been wounded, was found to
be missing. Two of his comrades went out and endeavoured to bring
him in, but were wounded and taken prisoners, a shell bursting
as they were lifting him from the ground.
He was a good athlete, playing football for Middlesex, and ran
in the marathon race from Windsor to London in 1913, which race
the king started himself. Unm.

brown hair, religious denomination Church of England. Embarked
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, aboard S.S. Southland 1 November
1916, arrived in Liverpool, England, 11 November 1916, to France

R. AGGER, Western Universities Batt. (Canada), killed by a shell
on March 29th. Private, Agger, who was the only son of Mr. Wm.
Agger, of 1117, Sherburn-street, Winnipeg, and late of Bridge-street,
Cambridge, was born at Grantchester, and is a nephew of Mrs.
North ("Agger's), Sussex-street. Cambridge. He was aged
21 years and 8 months. He enlisted at Winnipeg in September,
1916, left for overseas in October the same year, and arrived
in France last February.

Sergt.
John Charles Newell, of Cambridge, whose death in action on October
12th has been briefly reported in our columns, was educated at
the British Schools, Cambridge, under the late Mr. F. H. Bird.
He enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment on 19th June, 1900, and had
served at Bury St. Edmund’s, Colchester, Alderney (Channel
Islands), Felixstowe, Shorncliffe, South Africa, Kararchi and
Madras (India), Aden (Arabia), and Parkhurst Isle of Wight). Sergt.
Newell was a lifelong abstainer, and did good work for yhe temperance
cause here and elsewhere. He joined the Rechabites in India, and
passed through many offices and committees in the Minden Rose
Tent, Dist. 150. In Cambridge he was always ready to assist the
fatherless and widows by raising funds and in other ways. He was
secretary of the Carrodus Trust (3431), Cambridge and Jubilee
Juvenile Tents, and being a good cyclist, was able to reach outlying
districts and members, helping very materially to form tents of
I.O.R. at Royston, etc. He was a Past District Chief Ruler. Sergt.
Newell leaves a widow and two daughters, aged 3 and 6. Two of
his brothers are serving with the Colours, viz. Cook-Sergt. G.
W. Newell (Suffolk Yeomanry), and Private, Harry J. Newell (Army
Service Corps, M.T.).
