The
memorial is located in the grounds of Lower Albaston parish church cemetery
near Calstock. It takes the form of a rough hewn 'Crusader' cross on
a rough plinth with a single step. There are 43 names for World War
1, 35 for World War 2 and one for Korea. Please note: The order on the
memorial is different to here; the names have been sorted into alphabetical
order for ease of reading and searching.

co. Cornwall, M.D.,. by his wife, Edith, dau. of Charles George
Wood ; b. Gunnislake, co. Cornwall, 21 Sept. 1889 ; educ.
Skinners' School, Tunbridge Wells, where he had been a Corpl.
in the Cadet Corps ; qualified as a Solicitor, and practised at
Torrington, co. Devon, where he held the appointments of Clerk
to the Borough Justices, and Steward of the Town and Alms Lands
; joined the 5th (Territorial) Battn. Duke of Cornwall's Light
Infantry as a 2nd Lieut.; was promoted Lieut. to the 6th (Territorial)
Battn. Devonshire Regt. 27 Dec. 1913 ; volunteered for foreign
service on the outbreak of the European War ; was appointed Capt.
7 Oct. 1914, and proceeded to India with his battalion; left Lahore
for field service in Mesopotamia 28 Dec. 1915, and was killed
in action at the Battle of Es Sinn 8 March, 1916. Buried on the
battlefield. His Commanding Officer, Lieut.-Col. N. R. Radcliffe,
D.S.O., wrote “He was killed in the attack on the Dijialah
Redoubt at about 2 p.m. on 8 Aug., bravely leading his men over
ground without a vestige of cover, and swept by rifle and machine-gun
fire ; when lie was hit he told his men to go on and wished them
good luck. He was always keen and most conscientious in his work,
and we buried him at nightfall, within 250 yards of the enemy's
trenches." Unm.
