The ‘PEN-Y-CROIS’ is beside the main road between Antony and Torpoint. It was erected by Reginald Carew and lists only those from the First World War. The names are listed on the memorial by district and then force in which they served. Those from Sheviock are also mentioned on the memorial at Sheviock.

Wymond Nicholas Richard
Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 6th November 1917. Aged 21. Youngest son of Charles Edward and Ellen Henrietta Pole Carew, of Parkhill, Totnes, Devon. Educated at Marlborough. A.D.C. to Lord Willingdon (Governor of Bombay, 1915). Gold Medal, Sandhurst, 1916. In the 1911 census he was a boarder at school, aged 14, born Ceylon, resident 12 Bath Road Marlborough. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. POLE-CAREW, WYMOND NICHOLAS RICHARD, 2nd Lieut., 1st Battn. (32nd Foot) The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, yst, s. of Charles Edward Pole-Carew, of Parkhill, Totnes, co. Devon, by his wife, Ellen Henrietta, dau, of William Ayshford Sanford, of Nynehead Court, Wellington, co. Somerset; and nephew of General Sir Reginald Pole-Carew; b. Hatton, Ceylon, 3 Oct. 1896; educ, Marlborough; Wye Agricultural College, and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst; gazetted 2nd Lieut. the Wiltshire Regt. in Oct. 1914, with which he went to India, where he acted as A.D.C. to Lord Willingdon, Governor of Bombay, for six months; transferred to enter Sandhurst, where he was under-officer for a great portion of the time, and on leaving received the King's Gold Medal, and the Anson Memorial Sword on passing out of the Royal Military College ftrst ; gazetted 2nd Lieut. the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry in Oct. 1916; served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 23 March, 1917, and was killed in action at Polderhock, when in command of D Coy., 6 Nov. following. He had been in command of D Coy. for six weeks. His Commanding Officer wrote: “He was killed In an attack on a strong hostile position on 6 Nov. He was commanding D Coy., and led them to the assault in the early morning. He had gained a reputation for gallantry in previous actions, and he had been recommended for the Military Cross after the operations on 4 Oct." He was mentioned in General Sir Douglas Haig's Despatches of 7 Nov. 1917, for gallantry and distinguished service in the field. He was a keen sportsman, and had shown his prowess in big game hunting; unm.

Petty Officer Stoker K/3509, H.M.S. Nottingham, Royal Navy. Lost with his ship when it was sunk 19th August 1916. Aged 27. Born 23 April 1889 in Antony, Cornwall. Son of the late Mr. C. and Mrs. Mary Baser, of 37, Herbert Place, Morice Town, Devonport. Farm labourer before enlisting. Enlisted 14 July 1909 for 12 years. Height 5 feet 1¾ inches, chest 36¼ inches, hair light brown, eyes grey, complexion fresh. In the 1901 census he was aged 12, living with his parents Charles and Mary E Baser, born Cornwall, resident Macey Street, Antony, St Germans, Cornwall. No known grave. Gunner, H.M.S. Archer, Royal Navy. Drowned when washed overboard by heavy seas 22nd February 1919. Aged 32. Born 15 December 1884 in Torpoint, Cornwall. Enlisted from school 15 December 1902 for 12 years, aged 18. Height 5 feet 5 inches, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, fresh complexion. Son of Joseph and Elizabeth Cassey Burns, of 2, Wellington St., Torpoint, Cornwall. In the 1891 census he was aged 6, son of Joseph and Elizabeth C Burns, a scholar, born Torpoint, Cornwall, resident Harvey Street, Antony, St Germans, Cornwall. Son of John and Ellen Collings, of Antony Village, Torpoint, Plymouth; husband of Beatrice Collings of 34, Fore St., Torpoint, Plymouth. Coach boy prior to enlisting. Enlisted 3 March 1902 for 12 years, re-enlisted 3 March 1914 to the completion of the war. Height 5 feet 6¾ inches, hair auburn, eyes hazel, complexion fresh. In the 1911 census he was married to Beatrice Maud Collings, aged 27, a Seaman in the Navy, born Antony, resident 2 the Crescent, Torpoint, Cornwall. No known grave. Son of George and Elizabeth Harris, of Torpoint, Cornwall; husband of Mary Ellen Harris, of 9, Camperdown St., Stoke, Devonport, Plymouth. Born 9 October 1886, baptised 29 December 1886 in Charles the Martyr Church, Plymouth, son of Edward James and Alice Louisa Travers. In the 1901 census he was aged 14, grandson of Margery Cooper, son of Alice L Travers, born Plymouth, Devon, resident 8 Wellington Street, Torpoint, Antony, St Germans, Cornwall. Medically discharged from service 29 November 1915 at Aldershot aged 29 years 1 month, height 5 feet 6¾ inches, girth 35¼ inches, complexion sallow, grey eyes, black hair, Clerk by trade, intended place of residence Exminister Asylum. He was incoherent in speech and slurring in his speech and has grandiose ideas of wealth and power which he expresses freely (this was probably a case of PTSD), general paralysis, dilated pupils, increased knee jerks, mental confusion and his tongue was tremulous, untidy and careless in his habits not caused but aggravated by strain of active service. Served at home 6 August 1914 to 11 August 1914, with the Expeditionary Force in France 12 August 1914 to 5 December 1914 then at home 6 December 1914 to 29 November 1915.

VINTER, ROBERT BAGSTER WILSON, 2nd Lieut., 6th (Service) Battn. The Worcestershire Regt., elder s. of Capt. Sydney Garratt Vinter, Royal Army Medical Corps, of Torpoint, co. Cornwall, by his wife, Frances, dau. of the late William T. Toms, of Chard, co. Somerset ; b. Torpoint aforesaid, 5 April, 1896 ; educ. Sherborne School, where he was awarded a scholarship on passing from the preparatory to the school ; was awarded a Gold Medal for Classics, and was also secretary of the School Archaeological Society, and of the O.T.C. ; he was a Scholar-Elect of Keble College, Oxford ; obtained a commission 2 Feb. 1915 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders ; was awarded the Military Cross (London Gazette, 27 July, 1916], for conspicuous gallantry in taking a mine crater by bombing with half a dozen men, though wounded early in the action, and was killed in action at Les Boeufs 31 Oct. 1916.
