BLACKWATER WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 & Korea - detailed information

The memorial is a granite wheel cross osurmounting a two stepped plinth surrounded by eight granite posts holding a chain link fence. The memoRial stands by the roadside. There are 8 men who died in World War 1 and 8 men who died in World War 2, in addition there are 76 names of those who served in the First World War and returned. The memorial was unveiled on 24th June 19120 by the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall and the dedication was by the local clergy and dignitaries; reported in the Royal Cornwall Gazette & County news 30th June 1920.

Captain, 9th Battalion attached 6th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Died of wounds 11th December 1917. Aged 29. Son of John and Mary Oates, of Rock Cottage, Blackwater, Scorrier, Cornwall. Buried in YPRES RESERVOIR CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row B. Grave 16.
BAWDEN, MM Fred
Private 267367, 2nd/5th Battalion (Territorial), Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 25th April 1918. Born Scorries, Cornwall, enlisted Truro. Awarded the the Military Medal (M.M.) . No known grave. Commemorated on LOOS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 60 to 64.
COCKING Thomas

Private 345454, 16th (Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry and Royal North Devon Hussars) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Killed in action 18th September 1918. Buried in STE. EMILIE VALLEY CEMETERY, VILLERS-FAUCON, Somme, France. Special memorial 6A.

Note: Emilie Valley Cemetery contains 513 Commonwealth burials of the First World War. 222 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 21 casualties believed to be buried among them.

Bombardier 57993, 29th Battery, 42nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 14th August 1917. Born Cusgarne, Cornbwall, enlisted Exeter, Devon. Husband of Mrs. Cortis, of Blackwater Hill, Blackwater, Scorrier, Cornwall. Buried in LEBUCQUIERE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row E. Grave 8.
JENKIN James
Gunner 207040, 277th Brigade Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 30th November 1917. Aged 28. Enlisted Truro, resident Scorrier. Son of Thomas and Emma Jenkin, of Railway Farm, Blackwater, Scorrier, Cornwall. Buried in ROCQUIGNY-EQUANCOURT ROAD BRITISH CEMETERY, MANANCOURT, Somme, France. Plot IV. Row C. Grave 2.
PHILLIPS Charles [Samuel]
Private 202342, 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 30th November 1917. Born Torquay, Devon, enlisted Penzance. No known grave. Commemorated on CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. Panel 6.
POLLARD George
Private 45637, 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment. Killed in action 23rd April 1917. Aged 20. Born Kea, Cornwall, enlisted Exeter, resident Blackwater. Only son of Mary L. Pollard, of Centerville Farm, Penstrase, Truro, Cornwall, and the late George Pollard. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 4.

Private 2173577, 78th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). Died 28th July 1918. Aged 29. Born 15th July 1889 at St. Agnes, Cornwall. Son of Mr. William and Mrs. E. A. Spargo, of Penstraza, Blackwater, Scorrier, Cornwall. Resident 126 S. Curry Street, Ironwood, Michigan, U.S.A. Fireman by trade. Unmarried. Enlisted and passed fit 20th october 1917 at Winnipeg, Canada, aged 28, height 5 feet 5 inches, girth 33½ inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair black, religion Methodist. Buried in ANZIN-ST.
