This memorial is located in the main square, Launceston town centre. It takes the form of an elaborate, hexagonal, Eleanor Cross on a six stepped base with the crests of The Prince of Wales, Lancaster, Cornwall and DCLI on an open fret work at the top; there are tablets on the sides of the cross bearing the commemorations and names. The commemoration stone for the memorial was laid by HRH Edward, Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall on May 25th 1921. There are 83 names for World War 1 and 34 for World War 2.

ADAMS

William Henry
240305, Pioneer, Road Troops Depot, Royal Engineers. Born in Launceston in 1885, the son of Richard and Jane (Nee Paynter) Adams of Westgate St and husband of Ellen (Nee Hill) Adams of 3 Hendran Cottages, Western Road, Launceston. He enlisted in Aldershot on 4 December 1915. He was Wounded in Action (multiple GSW) on 23 April 1917, ending up in No1 Scottish General Hospital, Aberdeen. He was discharged on15 January 1918 with a 70% disability and died from influenza and nervous collapse at home on 5 November 1918, aged 33, and is buried in Launceston Cemetery, Grave No LL.17. His SWB No 314761, was issued on 25 January 1918.

BARTLETT

Stanley
2024216, Sapper, 11th Engineer Depot, Railway Construction Corps, Royal Canadian Engineers. Born in Launceston on 18 January 1891, the son of Richard Dawe and Mary Jane (Nee Congdon) Bartlett. He enlisted in Vancouver, British Columbia on 12 June 1918. He died on 23 October 1918, aged 27, from influenza and pneumonia while at Thurston Harbour Hospital, Vancouver and is buried in Prince Rupert (Fairview) Cemetery, Grave No 6.43.1, and commemorated in the Canadian Book of Remembrance and the Canadian Memorial, London.

BENNETT

Believed to be BENNETT, Dudley Charles Dighton, 702247, Private, B Company, 2/23rd Battalion, the London Regiment. Born in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1897, the son of Reverend Daniel Dighton and Gertrude Elizabeth Bennett of ‘Melrose’, St Thomas Road, Launceston. He enlisted in Bodmin on 25 October 1915, originally joining the RAMC (Regt No 74133) later transferred in May 1916. He was Killed in Action on 7 November 1917, aged 20, and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial , Panel 45-52, Israel and Palestine (Incl; Gaza).

Charles
33619, Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Lifton, Devon in 1897, the son of William Mary (Nee Sleeman) Bickle and husband of Alice (Nee Davey) Bickle of 3 Holborn Terrace, Launceston. He Died of Wounds on 11 September 1917, aged 30, and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Grave No XXV.P.3, Calais and also commemorated on Tavistock WM.

BRENDON

George Thomas
41720, Privates, 8th (Service) Battalion, the Lincolnshire Regiment. Born in Launceston in 1886, the son of George Edwards and Mary Phillips (Nee Ham) Brendon. He enlisted in Launceston originally joining the Army Service Corps (Regt No 016368). He was Killed in Action on 31 July 1917, aged 30, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 21, Belgium.

BRENT

Albert John
277151, Leading Stoker, Royal Navy – HMS Cupar. Born in Launceston on 27 October 1874, the son of Peter and Mary Ann (Nee Prior) of St Thomas, Launceston. He enlisted joining the 3rd Battalion DCLI (Regt No 2311) in 1894 and the Royal Navy on 18 July 1894. Once this was established, he was discharged from both services. In 1907 he rejoined the Royal Navy and served until he was discharged (invalided) on 4 November 1918. He died while in the Lancashire County Lunatic Asylum on 4 November 1919, aged 44.

16299, Lance Corporal, 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Christow, Devon in 1886, the son of William and Sarah Ann S (Nee Harvey) Bridgman of Tower Street, Launceston. He enlisted in Exeter. He Died of Wounds on 18 January 1917, while at No 25 General Hospital, Hardelot, aged 31, and is buried in Neufchatel-Hardelot Churchyard, Grave No 18, Neufchatel, France.

Frederick Harvey Langman

920, Lance Corporal, 10th (Service) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Born in Launceston in 1889, the son of Truman and Agnes Harvey (Nee Langman) Brighton of St Stephen, Launceston. He enlisted in London. He was Killed in Action on 23 April 1917, aged 28, and is buried in Chilli Trench Cemetery, Grave No B.16, Gavrelle, France.

BRIGHTON

Richard
243050, Private, D Company, 11th (Service) Battalion, the Cheshire Regiment. Born in Werrington Devon in 1884, the son of Truman and Agnes Harvey (Nee Langman) Brighton of St Stephen, Launceston. He enlisted in London initially joining the East Kent Regiment (Regt No 5453). He was Killed in Action on 20 April 1918, aged 33. His remains were exhumed and reburied on 26 June 1920 in Strand Military Cemetery, Grave No VII.O.5, Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium.

BRIGHTON

Thomas Stanley
200634, Corporal, 1/4th Battalion (Territorial Force), the Norfolk Regiment. Born in Launceston in 1881, the son of Truman and Agnes Harvey (Nee Langman) Brighton of St Stephen, Launceston. He enlisted in Norwich. He was Killed in Action on 19 April 1917, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Panel 11 – 15, Israel and Palestine (Incl Gaza).

BRIGHTON

Truman
107816, Gunner, 336th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Born in St Stephens, Launceston in 1878, the son of Truman and Agnes Harvey (Nee Langman) Brighton of Newport Cottages, Launceston and husband of Elizabeth (Nee Harris) Brighton of 29 Wheaton Road, Bournemouth. With previous service in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment, he enlisted on 10 December 1915, mobilized on 1 August 1916 at the Citadel, Plymouth, aged 37. He was Wounded in Action (Gassed) twice in November 1917 and June 1918, being evacuated to England on both occasions. He was demobilized on 2 January 1919 and died on 19 February 1920 at Christchurch, Hampshire, aged 41.
BROWN Thomas
38738, private, 2/4th Battalion (Territorial Force), the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Born in Launceston on 29 January 1899, the son of William and Mary Ann (Nee Kinsman) Brown. He was taken prisoner on 22 March 1918 near Marteville and ended up in a POW camp near Ingolstadt where he died on 14 November 1918, aged 19, his remains were reburied in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Grave No II.B.18, Germany.

4545, Private, 1/4th Battalion (Territorial Force), the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Stoke Damerel, Devon in 1891, the son of William Henry and Helen Gertrude (Nee Andrews) Buchan and husband of Beatrice Eveline Louise (Nee Trethewey) Buchan. He enlisted in Launceston. He Died of Wounds on 27 October 1915, aged 24 and is buried in Amara War Cemetery, Grave NoI.A.4, Iraq.

CAVEY

Douglas Ophia Edward Gordon
8224, Serjeant, 9th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Born in St Mary’s in 1889, the son of William John Ophia and Emma (Nee Aiano) Cavey and husband of Gertrude Kate (Nee Rice) Cavey of 5 Race Hill Terrace, Launceston. He enlisted in Devonport. On 30 August 1917, he was collecting casualties from the battlefield when he was struck by shrapnel from which he later died the same day. He was buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Grave No II.G 14, Elverdinghe, Belgium. He was 28 years old.

Frank Bate
201337, Lance Corporal, 1/4th Battalion (Territorial Force), the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Launceston in 1896, the son of Joseph and Florence Rosina Clarke of Southgate Place, Launceston. He enlisted in Launceston. His original regimental number being 4447. He died of Malaria on 3 April1917 aged 20, and is buried in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Grave No C.48, Egypt.

75300, Private, C Company, 9th (Service) Battalion, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in Launceston in 1896, the son of Thomas and Mary Ellen (Nee Manning) Cole of 5 Garcia Terrace, Launceston. He enlisted in Cardiff originally joining the Glamorgan Yeomanry (Regt No 3051). He was Killed in Action on 15 April 1918, aged 22, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 63-65, Belgium.

8409, Private, Royal Defence Corps. Born in Launceston in 1866, the son of Frederick and Amelia (Nee Peckard) Couch and husband of Lucy Beatrice Couch of 3 Southgate Terrace, Pinhoe, Devon. He enlisted on 28 September 1914, originally joining the DCLI. He was discharged on 24 September 1918, and he died at home on 10 September 1919, aged 53, and is buried Launceston Cemetery, Grave No DB.63.

Born in Lancaster, Lancashire in 1892, the son of Thomas and Ann (Nee Slater) Coombe of Carlton House, Newport, Launceston and husband of Ivy Maude (Nee Lane) Coombe of 2, Gifford Place, Mutley, Plymouth. He enlisted in Plymouth originally joining the Devonshire Regiment (Regt No 315697). He was Killed in Action on 31 July 1917, aged 34, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 54, Ypres, Belgium.

20819, Private, 10th (Service) Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Launceston in 1891, the son of Charles and Mary Jane Cudlipp of 15 Northgate Street, Launceston. He enlisted in Newton Abbott. He was Killed in Action on 10 February 1917, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece.

He was living with his uncle John and aunt Kate (Nee Tinney) Doidge of Church Street, Launceston when he enlisted. He was Killed in action on 23 April 1917, age d23, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 4, France.

80912, Private, 34th Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Born in St Thomas, Launceston in 1896, the son of Richard and Elizabeth Ann (Nee Caddy) Doidge of 40 St Thomas Road, Launceston. He enlisted in Launceston on 8 November 1915, arrived in France on 27 July 1916. He was admitted to No 1 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station on 30 September 1918 with Bronchopneumonia, then transferred to No 3 Canadian CCS, near Agnez Les Duisans on 25 October 1918, where he died on 28 October 1918, aged 22, and is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Grave No VII.B.43, Etrun, France.

Born in Launceston in 1891, the son of Charles Henry and Esther Elizabeth (Nee Sleep) Eveleigh of Fernlea, Launceston. He was Killed in Action on 16 July 1917, aged 24, and is buried in Fonquevillers Military Cemetery, Grave No I.C.4, France.

Born in Launceston in 1888, the son of John and Jeannie (Nee Ching) Geake and husband of Jessie Edith (Nee Lintern) Geake of May Cottage, St Stephen’s, Launceston. He enlisted in Plymouth, arriving in France on 25 July 1915. He was Killed in Action on 22 September 1915, aged 27, and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Panel 35-37, France.

He enlisted in Launceston originally joining the DCLI (Regt No 15599). He Died of Wounds on 6 July 1916, aged 25, and is buried in Le Treport Military Cemetery, Grave No 2.O.2A, France.

PLY/14099, Lance Corporal, 2nd Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry, 188th Brigade Trench Mortar Battery, the Royal Naval Division. Born in Dilton Marsh, Wiltshire on 2 September 1889, the son of John and Evalina (Nee Macey) Gray of Bath and husband of Islett (Nee Donning) Gray of Hill Park, Launceston. He enlisted in Launceston. He was accidentally killed in an explosion in a Stokes Mortar ammunition dugout on 4 August 1916, aged 20 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 1, France.

Born in Launceston in 1883, the son of Henry and Sarah Hill and husband of Mabel (Nee Woolridge) Hill of Bray’s Terrace, St Thomas Hill, Launceston. He enlisted in Tavistock. He was Killed in Action on 4 January 1917, aged 34 and is buried in Gorre British and Indian Cemetery, Grave No III.E.11, Beuvry, France.

M/14846, Cook’s Mate 2nd Class, Royal Navy – HMS Indefatigable. Born in Tiverton, Devon on 19 July 1897, the son of William John and Eliza Jane (Nee Tucker) Hill of 1 Tower Street, Launceston. He enlisted in Devonport. He was Killed in Action on 31 May 1916 at the battle of Jutland, aged 18, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Panel 17.

22342, Private, 1st Battalion, the Dorsetshire Regiment. Born in Carlow, County Carlow, Eire in 1895, the son of John and Seline (Nee Bowen) Hill of South View, Dutson Road, Launceston and the husband of Fanny France Norah (Nee Hunt) Hill of Alresford, Hampshire. He originally enlisted into the DCLI (Regt No 27179). He was Killed in Action on 14 June 1918, aged 23, and is buried in Berles New Military Cemetery, Grave No III.B.9, Berles-au-Bois, France.

HOCKIN

George Chamberlain
Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, the 7th Gurkha Rifles, attached to the 2nd Battalion. Born in Malabar, India in 1892, the son of John and Carolie Elizabeth Chamberlain (Nee Smith) Hockin of 13 Castle Street, Launceston. Having attended the Royal Military Academy Woolwich, he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army on 6 September 1911. He was Killed in action during the battle of Ctesiphon on 22 November 1915, aged 23 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Panel 55-67, Iraq.

HOWE

Edwin
M/5729, Plumber’s Mate, Royal Navy – HMS Indefatigable Born in Walmer, Kent in 1891, the son of Henry and Susannah Mary (Nee Avery) Howe of Passmore Edwards Institute, Launceston. He enlisted in Devonport on 3 March 1913. He was Killed in Action on 31 May 1916 at the battle of Jutland, aged 18, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Panel 17.

HUTCHINGS

John Henry
33969, Private, D Company, 13th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment) ("Green Howards") Born in Stokenham, Devon in 1882, the son of Thomas and Amelia (Sometime after the death of her husband Amelia remarried becoming Rowe), and husband of Blanche (Nee Jane) Hutchings of North Hill, Launceston. He originally enlisted into the Army Veterinary Corps (Regt No SE/19884). He was Killed in Action on 1 January 1918, aged 36, and is buried in Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, Grave No II.A.9, Mory, France.

JONES

Claude Samuel
7753, Private, 12 (Reserve) Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. Born in Launceston on 24 September 1893, the son of Charles Henry and Ellen Jane (Nee Potter) Jones of 19 Tredydon Road, Launceston. Having emigrated to Canada on 7 July 1910, at the start of the war he enlisted in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada. After training he was moved to the UK. While on leave he was admitted to the Auxiliary Hospital in Devonport on 7 July 1915. He returned to the Canadian Depot in Shorncliffe, Kent where he appears to have remained until he was admitted for the second time to the Canadian Hospital in [Sir John] Moore Barracks on 2 July 1916. He Died of Pneumonia, Mental Stress and Diabetic Coma at 3.35 am on 4 July 1916, and is buried in Launceston Cemetery, Grave No LL26, and commemorated on the Canadian Memorial, London and the Canadian Book of Remembrance.

JONES

Ernest
404867, Private, 44th Battalion (Manitoba), Canadian Expeditionary Force. Born on 6 June 1886, the brother of Claude (above) and husband of Ada Jones of Howard Apartments Trinity Square, Toronto, Canada. He enlisted in Toronto on 7 November 1914, stating he had previous military service with the DCLI militia. He arrived in the UK on 25 October 1915 going to the Canadian Deport at Shorncliffe. He too was treated at the Canadian Hospital between 13 – 25 February 1916. He was Killed in Action on 3 June 1917, aged 32 and is buried in Villers Station Cemetery, Grave No VIII.C.16, Villers-au-Bois, France.

LANGDON

Douglas Eckley
Captain, 1st Battalion, the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Huelva, Andalucia, Spain on 3 April1884, the son of William and Elinor Louise (Nee Langdon) of Kensey, Launceston. At the outbreak of the war, he was a respected Mechanical Engineer. While leading his company clearing out some ruined houses, he was Killed in Action on 23 April 1917, aged 33, and is buried in Sucrerie Cemetery, Grave No I.A.18, Ablain-St Navaire, France

LETHBRIDGE

Frederick George
O/429, Staff Sergeant, 13th Special Company, Army Service Corps. Born in Stonehouse, Devon on 1 February 1880, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Ann (Nee Lathey) and husband of Emma Jane (Nee Buckley) Lethbridge of Northern Haye Court, Tower Steer, Launceston. He enlisted into the ASC on 14 June 1897 (Regt No 3600). He appears to have been wounded while serving in Afghanistan and was evacuated back to what was then India. He Died of Wounds on 14 June 1919, aged 39, and is buried in Bannu Cemetery, Grave No 81, Peshawar, Pakistan, and commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) , face 23.

LLEWELLYN

William Mervyn Johnes
2nd Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, the South Wales Borderers. Born in Launceston on 5 May 1898, the son of Thomas Johnes and Annie Elizabeth (Nee Heath) Llewellin of St Stephen’s House, Launceston. He was Gazetted on 21 December 1917. He dies on 17 August 1918, aged 20. His body was found and reburied on 20 October 1919 by 18th Labour Company in St Mary’s A.D.S. Cemetery, Grave No XI.F.20, Haisnes, France and commemorated in the Welsh National Book of Remembrance.

LUKE

Herbert John
P/1522, private, Military Foot Police, Military Police Corps, attached to XV Corps Headquarters. Born in washaway on 18 April 1887, the son of John and Johanna (Nee Martin) Luke and husband of Mary (Nee Phare) Luke of Egloskerry. He enlisted in Bodmin. While at No 23 Casualty Clearing Station he Died of Wounds on 13 March 1918, aged 30, and is buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, Grave No IX.B.14A, France.

MADDEVER

Robert William Digory

2nd Lieutenant, 1/4th Battalion (Territorial Force), the Somerset Light Infantry, attached to 6th (Service) Battalion. Born in St Stephen, Launceston on 25 September 1893, the son of William and Margaret (Nee Tonkin) and husband of Margaret Maddever of 15 Duke Street, St Stephen, Launceston. He joined the Cornwall Territorials on 24 April 1915, later gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant on 20 July 1917, and arriving in France in September 1917. He Died of Wounds on 22 October 1917, aged 24, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 41-42, Belgium.

Note: He was originally buried in Sanctuary Wood by his battalion, but the grave was lost.

MARKS

Samuel John
1300, Gunner, 4th (Wessex) Brigade (Territorial Force), Royal Field Artillery, attached to 28th Division Ammunition Column. Born in St Stephens, Launceston in 1897, the son of John and Mary Grace (Nee Harvey) Marks of Hurdon Hill, Launceston. He enlisted in Tavistock, Devon. He Died of Wounds (Ruptured Spleen) on 24 August 1916, aged 18, and is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Grave No 1666, Kalamaria, Greece.

MARTIN

William Earle

358567, Pioneer, 9th Foreway Company, Royal Engineers. Born in Lawhitton in 1879, the son of John and Elizabeth (Nee Masters) Martin of 4 Monks Park, Ridge Grove, Launceston. He enlisted in Exeter originally joining the Suffolk Regiment (Regt No 28956). He Died of Wounds on 1 May 1918, age 39, and is buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery, Grave No II.A.5, France.

Note: Foreway Companies built and maintained narrow gauge ‘Trench’ tramways.

MAUNDER

Henry aka "Harry"
138350, Gunner, 117th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Born in Launceston in 1879, the son of Joseph and Selina (Nee Westlake) Maunder of Laurel Cottage, Race Hill, Launceston. He enlisted at the Citadel in Plymouth. He was wounded by a grenade in his dugout on Christmas day 1916 and was evacuated to a hospital in Rouen where he underwent an operation, unfortunately he died on 2 February 1917, aged 38, and is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Grave No O.V.B.7, Rouen, France and commemorated on the Royal Regiment of Artillery Memorial, London.

MAUNDER

William
24457, Private, 1st Battalion, the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in St Mary Magdalene, Launceston in 1892, the brother of Henry above. He enlisted in Launceston originally joining the Devon Royal Garrison Artillery, (Regt No 1549). He Died of Wounds on 2 August 1916, aged 24, and is buried in St Sever Cemetery, Grave No B.36.9, Rouen, France.

MEDLAND

Charles

315796, Sergeant, 15th Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Boscastle in 1883, the son of Edwin and Grace Medland of Chapple, Launceston and husband of May Emma (Nee Harry) Medland also of Chapple. He enlisted in the DCLI (Regt NO 540) and saw action in South Africa. On return to the England, he was transferred to the Devons. He was Wounded in Action (critical) and evacuated to a hospital in Herne Bay where he later died, just after his mother and wife had arrived, on 25 May 1917. He is buried in Launceston Cemetery, Grave No AA.61.

C1911 he was recorded as being a Colour Sergeant in the DCLI (Regt No 3655) serving at the Keep in Bodmin with previous service in India, Ceylon, and South Africa. He was discharged on 10 January 1913. In 1914 he was living in Launceston and reenlisted in Bodmin on the outbreak of the war. He was Killed in action on 31 July 1915, aged 41 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 20, Belgium.

Later transferred to the DCLI. Having been wounded in action he’d been received at a Field Hospital which was subsequently shelled by the enemy on 24 March 1918, and he was killed, aged 28, and is commemorated on the Poziers Memorial, Panel 45, France. in Action

While in the hospital at "Wold House," Near Driffield, East Yorkshire he died from influenza and double pneumonia on 18 N0vemebr 1918, aged 27, and is buried in Nafferton (All Saints) New Churchyard, Grave No C.33, East Yorkshire.

He enlisted in Launceston. He drowned 2 miles off the Italian Coast (one of the 412 men to do so) aged 23, after the ship HMT Transylvania was hit by 2 torpedoes from U 63. He accidentally wounded himself and was evacuated to the UK ending up in Netley Military Hospital where he eventually died from a burst abscess on the brain on 19 July 1917, aged 20 and is buried in Netley Military Hospital Cemetery, Officers’ 1917, Hampshire.
