This
memorial is located in the main square, Launceston town centre. It takes
the form of an elaborate, hexagonal, Eleanor Cross on a six stepped
base with the crests of The Prince of Wales, Lancaster, Cornwall and
DCLI on an open fret work at the top; there are tablets on the sides
of the cross bearing the commemorations and names. The commemoration
stone for the memorial was laid by HRH Edward, Prince of Wales and Duke
of Cornwall on May 25th 1921. There are 83 names for World War 1 and
34 for World War 2.

Pioneer, Road Troops Depot, Royal Engineers. Born in Launceston
in 1885, the son of Richard and Jane (Nee Paynter) Adams of Westgate
St and husband of Ellen (Nee Hill) Adams of 3 Hendran Cottages,
Western Road, Launceston. He enlisted in Aldershot on 4 December
1915. He was Wounded in Action (multiple GSW) on 23 April 1917,
ending up in No1 Scottish General Hospital, Aberdeen. He was discharged
on15 January 1918 with a 70% disability and died from influenza
and nervous collapse at home on 5 November 1918, aged 33, and is
buried in Launceston Cemetery, Grave No LL.17. His SWB No 314761,
was issued on 25 January 1918. |

Sapper, 11th Engineer Depot, Railway Construction Corps, Royal Canadian
Engineers. Born in Launceston on 18 January 1891, the son of Richard
Dawe and Mary Jane (Nee Congdon) Bartlett. He enlisted in Vancouver,
British Columbia on 12 June 1918. He died on 23 October 1918, aged
27, from influenza and pneumonia while at Thurston Harbour Hospital,
Vancouver and is buried in Prince Rupert (Fairview) Cemetery, Grave
No 6.43.1, and commemorated in the Canadian Book of Remembrance
and the Canadian Memorial, London. |

Elizabeth Bennett of ‘Melrose’, St Thomas Road, Launceston. He enlisted
in Bodmin on 25 October 1915, originally joining the RAMC (Regt
No 74133) later transferred in May 1916. He was Killed in Action
on 7 November 1917, aged 20, and is commemorated on the Jerusalem
Memorial , Panel 45-52, Israel and Palestine (Incl; Gaza). |

October 1874, the son of Peter and Mary Ann (Nee Prior) of St Thomas,
Launceston. He enlisted joining the 3rd Battalion DCLI (Regt No
2311) in 1894 and the Royal Navy on 18 July 1894. Once this was
established, he was discharged from both services. In 1907 he rejoined
the Royal Navy and served until he was discharged (invalided) on
4 November 1918. He died while in the Lancashire County Lunatic
Asylum on 4 November 1919, aged 44. |

exhumed and reburied on 26 June 1920 in Strand Military Cemetery,

With previous service in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the Devonshire
Regiment, he enlisted on 10 December 1915, mobilized on 1 August
1916 at the Citadel, Plymouth, aged 37. He was Wounded in Action
(Gassed) twice in November 1917 and June 1918, being evacuated to
England on both occasions. He was demobilized on 2 January 1919
and died on 19 February 1920 at Christchurch, Hampshire, aged 41.

in Niederzwehren Cemetery, Grave No II.B.18, Germany. |

Terrace, Launceston. He enlisted in Devonport. On 30 August 1917,
he was collecting casualties from the battlefield when he was struck
by shrapnel from which he later died the same day. He was buried
in Canada Farm Cemetery, Grave No II.G 14, Elverdinghe, Belgium.
He was 28 years old. |

2nd Lieutenant in the Indian Army on 6 September 1911. He was Killed
in action during the battle of Ctesiphon on 22 November 1915, aged
23 and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Panel 55-67, Iraq.

He originally enlisted into the Army Veterinary Corps (Regt No SE/19884).
He was Killed in Action on 1 January 1918, aged 36, and is buried
in Mory Abbey Military Cemetery, Grave No II.A.9, Mory, France.

in Launceston on 24 September 1893, the son of Charles Henry and
Ellen Jane (Nee Potter) Jones of 19 Tredydon Road, Launceston. Having
emigrated to Canada on 7 July 1910, at the start of the war he enlisted
in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada. After training he was moved to the
UK. While on leave he was admitted to the Auxiliary Hospital in
Devonport on 7 July 1915. He returned to the Canadian Depot in Shorncliffe,
Kent where he appears to have remained until he was admitted for
the second time to the Canadian Hospital in [Sir John] Moore Barracks
on 2 July 1916. He Died of Pneumonia, Mental Stress and Diabetic
Coma at 3.35 am on 4 July 1916, and is buried in Launceston Cemetery,
Grave No LL26, and commemorated on the Canadian Memorial, London
and the Canadian Book of Remembrance. |

Born on 6 June 1886, the brother of Claude (above) and husband of
Ada Jones of Howard Apartments Trinity Square, Toronto, Canada.
He enlisted in Toronto on 7 November 1914, stating he had previous
military service with the DCLI militia. He arrived in the UK on
25 October 1915 going to the Canadian Deport at Shorncliffe. He
too was treated at the Canadian Hospital between 13 – 25 February
1916. He was Killed in Action on 3 June 1917, aged 32 and is buried
in Villers Station Cemetery, Grave No VIII.C.16, Villers-au-Bois,
France. |

clearing out some ruined houses, he was Killed in Action on 23 April
1917, aged 33, and is buried in Sucrerie Cemetery, Grave No I.A.18,

of Northern Haye Court, Tower Steer, Launceston. He enlisted into
the ASC on 14 June 1897 (Regt No 3600). He appears to have been
wounded while serving in Afghanistan and was evacuated back to what
was then India. He Died of Wounds on 14 June 1919, aged 39, and
is buried in Bannu Cemetery, Grave No 81, Peshawar, Pakistan, and
commemorated on the Delhi Memorial (India Gate) , face 23. |

on 21 December 1917. He dies on 17 August 1918, aged 20. His body
was found and reburied on 20 October 1919 by 18th Labour Company
in St Mary’s A.D.S. Cemetery, Grave No XI.F.20, Haisnes, France
and commemorated in the Welsh National Book of Remembrance. |

Clearing Station he Died of Wounds on 13 March 1918, aged 30, and

on 24 April 1915, later gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant on 20 July 1917,
and arriving in France in September 1917. He Died of Wounds on
22 October 1917, aged 24, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot
Memorial, Panel 41-42, Belgium. Note:
He was originally buried in Sanctuary Wood by his battalion, but
the grave was lost.

It is believe he served with the 1/5th (Prince of Wales’s) Battalion
