LEZANT WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands near the village of Lezant, just off the roadside. A cross of white bells have also been planted in front of it. Those from the First World War are listed in the year which they died rather than alphabetical. The memorial also states in which force they served.

1915

HODGE

William Thomas

[Listed as HMS Nymph on memorial and CWGC] Leading Seaman 186532 (Dev), HMS Nymphe, Royal Navy. Died from disease 31st October 1915. Born 21st April 1878 in Callington, Cornwall. Husband of Beatrice Hodge (nee Stacey), of 21, Stoke Terrace, Stoke, Devonport, Devon, married 1907 in Kings Norton Registration District, Worcestershire. In the 1881 census he was aged 2, born Lezant, Cornwall, son of John and Margy G Hodge, resident Beals Mill, Lezant, Launceston, Cornwall. In the 1901 census he was a visitor, aged 21, born Lezant, Cornwall, Seaman Royal Navy, visiting Phyllis Huggins and family at 28, Wolsdon Street, Plymouth, Devon. Buried in PLYMOUTH (FORD PARK) CEMETERY, Devon. General Section D. Row 17. Grave 6.

Note: HMS Nymphe was launched 31 January 1911 and complete May 1911, built by Hawthorn Leslie & Company. In mid-1913, she was with the Second Destroyer Flotilla. A Destroyer of the Acorn class. Reduced to C. & M. Party at Portsmouth on 17 October, 1919. Sold May 1921.

BRAY

Leonard H
Private 930, Royal North Devon Hussars Yeomanry. Killed in actioin at Gallipoli 29th November 1915. Aged 22. Born Lezant, enlisted Holsworthy, resident Beaworthy. Brother of Frederick Bray, of Barton Cottages, Dunterton, Tavistock. Buried in GREEN HILL CEMETERY, Turkey. Plot I. Row A. Grave 19.

1916

Wheeler TS/10559 [TS/100556 on CWGC], 2nd Depot Company, Royal Army Service Corps. Died in United Kingdom 18th April 1916. Aged 30. Born and resident Lezant, enlisted Woolwich. Son of George Henry Roberts and Henrietta Roberts. Buried in GREENWICH CEMETERY, London. Screen Wall. 3 "C." A. 347.

Walter
Stoker 1st Class K/16772, HMS Indefatigable, Royal Navy. Died 31st May 1916. Aged 20. Son of Samuel and Emily Lee, of Lower Larrick, Lezant, Launceston, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 16.

Ernest [Albert]
Private 8/4864, 13th (Service) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died in United Kingdom 26th February 1917. Aged 24. Born and resident Lezant, enlisted Launceston. Son of J. and Mary M. Jasper, of Trecarrell Mill, Lezant, Launceston. Formerly 34th Training Reserves. Buried in COAD'S GREEN WESLEYAN CHAPELYARD, Cornwall.

Private 829773, 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (New Brunswick Regiment). Killed in action 3rd June 1917. Aged 24. Born 23rd March 1893 at Lezant. Son of Charkes Lane, of Lezant Cornwall. Farmer by trade. Unmarried. Enlisted and passed fit 13th September 1915 at Winipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Height 5 feet 2½ inches, girth 35 inches, complexion medium, eyes blue, hair brown; Methodist. Buried in LA CHAUDIERE MILITARY CEMETERY, VIMY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot V. Row B. Grave 13. Private 42460, 9th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 20th September 1917. Born and resident Lezant, enlisted Launceston. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Formerly 164212, Royal Field Artillery. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 52 to 54 and 162A.

[Listed as Charles Thomas on the memorial] Private 20872, 1/6th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 19th October 1917. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgum. Panel 80 to 82 and 163A.

Sergeant 432571, 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). Killed in action in the vicinity of Passchendaele 30th October 1917. Born 27th July 1892 at Lezant. Son of Harry and Bessie Doney, of Lezant, Cornwall. Unmarried. Enlisted and passed fit 9th January 1915 at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Height 5 feet 5½ inches, 141lbs, girth 33 inches, complexion dark, eyes grey, hair dark; Church of England. Labourer by trade. Sailed from Montreal to Europe aboard S.S. "Metagama" 3rd June 1915. Buried in POELCAPELLE BRITISH CEMETERY, Langemark-Poelkapelle, West-Vlaanderen, Belgum. Plot IX. Row E. Grave 11. [Listed as Canadian Forestry Corps on memorial] Private 19837, 10th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). Died in Connaught Hospital, Aldershot, 2nd December 1918 from influenza. Aged 26. Born 1st January 1892 at Launceston. Son of Alfred and Mary Jane Abbott, of Lezant. Blacksmith by trade. Unmarried. Passed fit 5th September 1914, enlisted 24th September 1914 at Valcartier, Canada. Height 5 feet 5½ inches, girth 35 inches, complexion dark, eyes grey, hair dark brown; Wesleyan. Previously suffered wounds to the right jaw in 1916. Buried in LEZANT (ST.
