MILLBROOK
WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 -
detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Paula & Dave Kennington 2008
The
memorial was originally positioned on the quayside and had railings
around it but can now be found in the grounds of All Saints Church,
Newport Street, Millbrook. It takes the form of a granite Celtic cross
on a tapering granite shaft and a tapering granite plinth with the names
in black; the whole is set on a square base with a surrounding paved
area. Those names from the First World War are listed by the force in
which they served and are not alphabetical on the memorial. For ease
of reference, these have been left in the force in which they served
but have been put into alphabetical order. Those who died in the Second
World War had their names added to the plinth on which the Celtic Cross
stood. There are 50 names for World War 1 and 36 for World War 2. In
the current location by the church, the paving stones came from the
beach at Barn Pool where they were placed onto the sand so vehicles
could be loaded up there for the D-Day landings. The memorial is a Grade
II listed building.
