The Mithian memorial is in the centre of the village in the form of a Roll of Honour plaque within the village hall. There are four names listed for those who died, but also a Roll of Honour of men who served and returned, 44 names which have been listed after those who died and have been sorted into alphabetical order..

Private 10439, 6th Battalion, Duke Of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 16 September 1916. Born Perrancoombe, Perranporth, Cornwall, resident St. Agnes, Cornwall, enlisted Bodmin, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 6 B.

TIPPETT

John Bowden

Private 41695, 2nd/6th Battalion, Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) formerly 177310, King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 22 November 1917. Aged 35. Born St. Agnes, Cornwall, enlisted Newquay, Cornwall. Son of Maria Tippett, of Goonbell, St. Agnes, Scorrier, Cornwall, and the late John Bowden Tippett; husband of Clara Olive Tippett, of New Park, Blackwater, Truro, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. Panel 5.

TIPPETT

Richard Edward

[Listed as Corporal on memorial] Private 1270, "B" Company, 3rd Regiment, South African Regiment. Died of wounds received at the Battle of Agagia, Egypt, 28 February 1916. Aged 40 [42 on CWGC]. Born 29 August 1875. Served with South African Forces. Son of Edward D. and M. J. Tippett, of Thorn Terrace, Mithian, St. Agnes, Cornwall. In the 1881 census he was aged 5, son of Edward and Mary Jane Tippett, born Cornwall, resident Perran Coombe, Perranzabuloe, Truro, Cornwall. In the 1891 census he was aged 15, born Cornwall, a Tin Miner, son of Edward and Mary J Tippett, resident Anchor Farm, Trevelles Downs, St Agnes, Truro, Cornwall. Sailed as a Steward, aged 23, from Southampton to Port Elizabeth (Algoa Bay), aboard Norham Castle, 4 March 1899, unmarried. In the South Africa, Local Armed Forces Nominal Rolls, 1899-1902, he was listed as Private 167, 1st Battalion, Railway Pioneer Regiment, served with the South African Field Force and was taken Prisoner of War on 22 December 1900 near Burghersdorp, released the same day. Buried in ALEXANDRIA (CHATBY) MILITARY AND WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Plot E. Grave 146.

WHITFORD  

Simon Henry

Second Lieutenant, 8936, 3rd Regiment, South African Infantry. Died of wounds 21 March 1918. Aged 25. Served with South African Forces. Born 5 April 1893 in Cornwall, England. Baptised 20 February 1894 in St Agnes, Cornwall, son of John and Ann Searle. Son of John and Ann Searl Whitford, of Mithean Street, St. Agnes, Cornwall, England. A clerk with Crown Mines. Sailed from Southampton to Capetown, South Africa, aged 2, on 22 September 1894, aboard the Dunottar Castle, with Mrs Whitford, aged 35, and E H Whitford, aged 5. Promoted from Corporal to Temporary Lieutenant 27 November 1917 [The London Gazette, Publication Date 14 December 1917. Supplement 30430, Page 13171, Overseas Contingents]. Commemorated in ROYE NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Somme, France. Grave lost. Marchelepot British Cemetetry. Memorial 35.

Extract from West Briton and Cornwall Advertiser - 29 March 1906, page 5:

PRESENTATION AT TRURO COLLEGE. —On Monday, March 26th, the head master (Mr. H. W. Vinter, MA.) presented to Mrs. Opie, matron of Truro College, on behalf of Captain John Whitford, Johannesburg, through his sons, Howard and Simon Whitford, a very handsome tea and coffee service as a token of respect in which she is held by the parents and the boys. The head master spoke of the very valuable and efficient services of Mrs. Opie during the past eleven years, and expressed a hope that she would remain at Truro College for many years to come. A second presentation to Mrs. Opie, consisting of a beautiful polished oak bureau, was made on behalf of the Governors and the Head Master, in appreciation of her able management
