The
Pendeen War Memorial is in the form of a Celtic Cross standing on a
plinth surrounded by a wrought iron link fence that stands in the centre
of the overflow graveyeard of St John the Baptist parish church. The
builders and designers were Messrs. W.H. Snell & Sons; the memorial
was dedicated 19 June 1920 by the Lord Bishop of Truro. The Cornishman
9 June 1920 records that £142 2s. 2d. was raised by public subscription
for the memorial.

Died 11 November 1918. Aged 25. Baptised 23 August 1893 in Pendeen,
Cornwall, daughter of James and Mary Jane Williams Bennetts. In
the 1911 census she was aged 17, born Pendeen, rewsident with her
widowed mother, Mary W Bennetts, at Merivale House, Lower Trewellard,
Pendeen, St Just, Cornwall. Buried in PENDEEN PARISH GRAVEYARD,
Cornwall.

DEATHS.
BENNETTS.—On Nov. 11th, at the Welsh Hospital,
Netley, of pneumonia, following influenza, Nursing Sister Rita
Mary Bennetts, beloved and sixth daughter of Mrs. Bennetts, of
Merivale House, Pendeen, aged 25 years.

Died 18 December 1916. Samuel Harvey Bone birth registered in the
January to February Quarter 1892, baptised 1 May 1892 in Pendeen,
Cornwall. IN the 1901 census Samuel H Bone was aged 9, born St.
Just, son of Thomas (a tin miner) and Jane Bone, resident with his
parents in Boscaswell, St Just in Penwith, Penzance, Cornwall. Mr
S H Bone departed 13 August 1910 for Southampton travelling to Cape
Town, South Africa. Buried in FAUBOURG D'AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS,

In the 1911 census he was aged 23, born Rosemergy Morvah, Cornwall,
son working on farm, son of Hannah Davey, a widow, resident Trenowan,
Pendeen S O, Morvah, Cornwall. In the 1901 census he was aged 13,
born Morvah, Cornwall, son of John and Hannah Davey, resident Trevowan,
Morvah, Penzance, Cornwall. No known grave. |

from the Cornishman 9 June 1920, page 5:
"The
internment of the late Pte. William Michael Ellis, son of the
late Mr. Thomas Hy. Ellis, and of Mrs. Ellis, of Boscaswell House,
Pendeen, who passed away at the above place on May 19th, after
some months of illness, took place on the 22nd May, at the church
cemetery, Pendeen, amid every token of esteem and respect. Deceased
did his part for KIng nd country during the great war. He contracted
a chill from which he never recovered. Much sympathy is felt for
his widowed mother and members of the family. Deceased was well
liked."

hair, miner by trade, residence Trewellard, St Just in Penwith,
Cornwall. Suffered from Phthisis originatin at La Bassel in June
1916n when he caught a chill while on duty, sent to hospital at
Bethune, developed pneumonia, sent to England 6 months 10 days sick
furlough, taken ill at home, admiited 22 October 1916 for pneumonia
that changed to Phthisis. Served in France 2 January 1916 to 12
July 1916. Attested 8 December 1915. Son of Edward Arnold Lawry
of St Just, Cornwall. Death registered in January to March Quarter
1917 in Penance, Cornwall, aged 22. In the 1911 census he was aged
16, a Tin Miner Below ground, born Sancreed, resident with his parents
Edward and Ann, at Leswidden Cottage, St Just, Cornwall. |
