WORLD
WAR 2
Penlee
House and Gardens were purchased by the Penzance Borough Council at
the end of the second world war in order to perpetuate the memory of
those who had made the supreme sacrifice and as a tribute others from
the Borough who had served in the armed forces and in the civil defense
force. The Mayor Alderman Albert Thomas C.C. opened them to the public
on the ninth of June 1946. A book of names is kept in the Garden of
Remembrance and a page is turned each day.
Penlee house now houses a Museum and Art Gallery which has both a renown
collection of paintings as well as a series of exhibitions throughout
the year. The Gardens are open to the public and meals and snacks can
be purchased in Penlee House.
Note:
Only one page of the book of remembrance has been transcribed, H-J.
THe other pages are still in need of transcription. The Book of Remembrance
that is pictured was replaced in 2014 because it contained sparse information.
A new book was formally presented to Penzance by the Town Council in
August 2014 during the celebrations to mark the 400th year since the
granting of the charter to the town and the 100th anniversary of the
outbreak of the Great War. This book is now on display in the corridor
outside Gallery 5 within Penlee Gallery. A copy is in the Memorial gardens
Chapel. There are still a few names lacking information but the remainder
now have additional information - Rank, Name, Initials, Decorations,
Unit and Theatre of operation/death.
The biographical
details for the Penzance area covering from the Second Boer War to the
present day have been researched and all less about 15 have been identified
and are held by Major Robert Harrison.
