The Perranuthnoe War Memorial is in the form of a Celctic Cross mounted on a plinth and stands in the parish churchyard looking down on the road.

Able Seaman Bristol Z/1909, S.S. "Dunrobin", Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 24th November 1917. Son of William and Annie Allen, of Rosendian Downs, Perranuthnoe, Marazion, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 24.

DAWE

Ernest

Rifleman 5779, 1st/21st (County of London) Battalion (First Surrey Rifles), London Regiment. Killed in action 12th September 1916. Born and resident Goldsithney, Marazion, Cornwall, enlisted Bodmin. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, france. Pier and Face 13 C.

EADE

Alfred

Private 33279, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Killed in action 26th October 1917. Aged 25. Born Perranuthnoe, enlisted Marazion, resident Perran Downs. Son of Alfred and Amelia Eade, of Perran Downs, Goldsithney, Marazion, Cornwall. Buried in HOOGE CRATER CEMETERY, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot IX. Row L. Grave 6.

LAITY

John Henry

Private 102708 [SDGW states 202708], 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 30th November 1917. Born Perranuthnoe, enlisted Hayle, resident Marazion. No known grave. Commemorated on CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL, Nord, France. Panel 6.

Richard Henry

Private 41710, 8th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Died 9th November 1918. Aged 30. Enlisted Bodmin, resident Cornwall. Son of John Henry and Beatrice Laity; husband of Nellie Laity, of Trescowe, Marazion, Cornwall. Buried in COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY, Koln (Cologne), Nordrhein-Westfal, Germany. Plot V. Row E. Grave 2.

LIDSTONE

John

Chief Stoker 155341, H.M.S. "Warrior", Royal Navy. Died 31st May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Aged 41. Son of Robert and Ann Lidstone, of Marldon, Paignton, Devon; husband of Boadicea Mabel Rodda (formerly Lidstone), of Fore St., Marazion, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 14.

Note: HMS Warrior was a Warrior Class Large Armoured Cruiser, built Pembroke Dockyard, laid down November 1903, launched 25th November 1905, completed December 1906. She was initially with 1st Cruiser Squadron Mediterranean Fleet and in August 1914 was involved in hunt for SMS Goeben and Breslau. In November 1914 she was in Sierra Leone and then in December 1914 onwards she was aprt of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron Grand Fleet. She took part in the Battle of Jutland 31st May 1916. She was later damaged by gunfire and foundered during towing 1st June 1916.

Their names will live for evermore.

1939-1945

CURNOW

Edward Lyndon

Ordinary Seaman D/JX 163192, H.M.S. "Matabele", Royal Navy. Died 17th January 1942 when sunk by U-454 . Aged 18. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Cumow, of Goldsithney, Cornwall. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 67, Column 1.

Note: HMS Matabele was a Tribal Class Destroyer buit by Scotts Shipbuilding & Engineering Co. (Greenock, Scotland). Laid down 1st October 1916, launched 6th October 1937 and commissioned 25th January 1919. HMS Matabele arrived at Plymouth, England on 26th January 1939 and after completing her sea trials went to Portland England to join the 2nd Tribal Destroyer Flotilla.

On 8 January 1942, HMS Matabele and HMS Somali were ordered to join the escort of convoy PQ-8. On 17 January, just off Kola Inlet, HMS Matabele (Cdr. A.C. Stanford, DSC, RN) was torpedoed by the German submarine U-454 and sank in two minutes. Even in that short time, many had managed to abandon ship only to be frozen to death in the icy waters.

BOSTON

Private S/160358, Royal Army Service Corps. Died 13th February 1944. Aged 47. Son of Albert and Martha Boston, husband of Frances Mary Boston, of Goldsithney. Buried in ST. HILARY OF POITIERS CHURCH CEMETERY, ST. HILARY, Cornwall.

PHILLIPS, DFC

Frank

Flight Lieutenant 37827, 204 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 21st July 1940. Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.) flying a Short Sunderland I - N90246/KG-F, 204 Squadron, Invergordon, April 1940 (LT. Frank Philips And Cpl. Lillie - Winners of the DFC and DFM). No known grave. Commemorated on RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey. Panel 4.

Note: 204 Squadron - World War 2 - The squadron began to convert to Sunderlands in June 1939 and No. 204 was fully equipped with eight boats by the end of September. On the outbreak of war, the patrols began over the channel and the Western Approaches and in April 1940 the squadron moved to the Shetlands for patrols off Norway. A further move to Iceland took place in April 1941 and in July No. 204 moved to Gibraltar and next month to Gambia. For the rest of the war the squadron flew anti-submarine patrols off the coasts of West Africa and disbanded on 30 June 1945.

THOMAS

Arthur Leonard

Stoker LT/KX 124870, H.M.S. "Europa", Royal Naval Patrol Service. Died 29th May 1943. Aged 37. Son of Francis and Emily Thomas, of Marazion; husband of Florence Maud Thomas, of Goldsithney. Buried in MARAZION CEMETERY, Cornwall. Plot H. 1. Grave 15.
