SANCREED WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - detailed information

The Sancreed War Memorial stands just outside the parish church grounds in Village Street and covers those who died in World War 1 and 2. It takes the form of a two-stepped base surmounted by a plinth, tapering shaft and stylised Celtic Cross. There is an inscription on one side of the shaft and plinth; on the face of the cross is a wreath and the words `PRO PATRIA' inside; there is Celtic tracery on the cross. There are 13 names listed for World War 1 qand 2 for World War. The memorial was unveiled by Lord St Levan 7 December 1919. The memorial site cost £105 5s. 6d, the architect was Capt. F Latham and the builders Messrs W H Snell & Sons. Details about the memorial appeared in The Cornishman 3 December 1919 (page 3).

Within the church on the north wall is a large nowy headed wooden board divided into three panels, with the inscription in red and black painted lettering and the names of the fallen in the centre those who served and returned on the left and right of the fallen. The top of the board has roses carved into the left and right hand cornees and a cross in the centre. There are 87 names in total including the ame 13 who died listed on the memorial. The board was dedicated and unveiled by Lord St Levan 7 December 1919 and cost £41. The wood carvers were Messrs Wappell & Son. Also within the church is another wooden board with inset nowy-headed section with the inscription inscribed within it; the inscription is in gold painted lettering with a wreath carved in the top centre of the board. There are 51 names listed of those who served and returned and the 2 names of those who made th ultimate sacrifice, as listed on the esxternal memorial.

Gunner 65330, 242nd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of pneumonia in 13 Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 11th May 1917. Aged 24. Born Culval, enlisted Bodmin, resident Newbridge, Cornwall. Baptised 23 July 1892 in Penzance, Cornwall. Son of George and Grace Ellen Bolitho, of Newbridge, Penzance. In the 1901 census he was aged 8, born Gulval, Cornwall, resident with his parents, George and Ellen, at New Bridge, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. He attested 21 March 1916 aged 23 years 8 months. Employed as a Steerer on Engine. Resident Newbridge, nr Penzance. Unmarried. Became First Class Signaller 18 September 1916 then 1st Class in Sgnalling and Telephony at Hepswell Camp 10 October 1916. With 242 Seige Battery from 25 October 1916. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row B. Grave 16.

CHAPPLE

James
Private 30317, 1st Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action 12th October 1917. Aged 35. Born Sancreed, enlisted Penzance. Husband of Louisa E. Pidwell (formerly Chapple), of 37, Fore St., Redruth, Cornwall. Married Louisa E Warren in the July to September Quarter 1913 in the Penzance Registration Disitrict, Cornwall. In the 1881 census he was aged 1, born Sancreed, Cornwall, resident with his parents, George and Ann, at Ennestreven, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. In the 1891 census he was aged 11, born Sancreed, Cornwall, resident with his parents, George and Ann, at Treganhoe, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. Formerly 202480, Middlesex Regiment. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 18 to 19.

CHAPPLE 

William John
Private 24776, 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 2nd April 1918. Born Sancreed, enlisted Penzance. In the 1891 census he was aged 4, born Sancreed, Cornwall, resident with his parenets, William and Mary A, at Drift, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. In the 1901 census he was aged 14, born Sancreed, Cornwall, yardman on farm, resident with his parenets, William and Mary A, at Lower Drift, Drift, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 45.

GRENFELL 

William Henry
Private, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry transferred to 215008, Labour Corps. Died 22nd March 1919. Aged 29. Son of William Henry and Mary Elizabeth Grenfell; husband of Geraldine Victoria Rowe (formerly Grenfell) of 1, Chapel Row, Madson. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, a working farmer's son, born St Just, Cornwall, resident with his parents at Receven New Bridge, Sancreed, Cornwall. Married Geraldine V Jordan in the July to September Quarter 1913 in Penzance Registration District. Buried outside west window of south aisle in SANCREED CHURCHYARD, SANCREED, Cornwall.

Private 27041, 6th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 16th September 1916. Aged 19. Born Sancreed, enlisted Penzance, resident Buryas Bridge, Devon. Son of Simon Symons Hosken and Marianne Hosken, of Lafrowda Villa, Drift, Buryas Bridge, Cornwall. In the 1901 census he was an only son, aged 4. born Sancreed, Cornwall, resident with his parents Simon and Marrianne, at Lower Drift, Drift, Sancreed, Penzance, Cornwall. In the 1911 census he was an only son, aged 14. born Sancreed, Cornwall, s carpeneter, resident with his parents Simon and Marrianne, at Drift, Buryas Bridge, Sancreed, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 6 B.

Frederick John
Gunner 321675, Cornwall (Duke of Cornwall's - Territorial) RGA, 93rd Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of wounds 1st June 1917. Aged 19. Born Maddorn, enlisted Penzance. Son of Walter and Susan Kessell, of Catchall, Burvas Bridge, Cornwall. Buried in LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot XII. Row C. Grave 6.

Private 44546 [SDGW] or 42546 [CWGC], 8th (Service) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 6th June 1918. Aged 19. Born 5th September 1898, St Just, enlisted Penzance. Son of Francis Lawry and Elizabeth Jane Lawry (nee Tonkin). Formerly 3286, Royal North Devon Hussars. No known grave. Commemorated on SOISSONS MEMORIAL, Aisne, France.
