SHEVIOCK WAR MEMORIAL

This memorial is located in the grounds of St Mary’s Parish Church and is in the form of a Celtic style granite cross which is set on a tapered plinth on a single slab base. All those mentioned for 1914-1918 are also to be seen on the memorial at Antony.

Chief Petty Officer 172647, "A" Company, Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Royal Navy. Died 4th June 1915. Aged 38. Husband of Ethel Callaghan, of The Cottage, Crafthole, Cornwall. Also served at Antwerp. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 1 and 2.

Rifleman 5775, 21st Battalion (First Surrey Rifles), London Regiment. Died 12th September 1916. Aged 28. Son of John Henry and Eliza Jane Davey, of Crafthole, Cornwall. Buried in CATERPILLAR VALLEY CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL, Somme, France. Plot VIII. Row A. Grave 40.

Petty Officer Stoker 279642, H.M.S. cassandra, Royal Navy. Died 5th December 1918. Aged 42. Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Son of John and Mary Giddy, of Crafthole, St. Germans; husband of Annie L. Giddy, of Keyham Cottage, Crafthole, St. Germans, Cornwall. Present at the Battles of Heligoland, Dogger Bank and Jutland in H.M.S. "Lion.". No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Plymouth, Devon. Panel 27.

Gunner 152662, 59th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 2nd September 1918. Aged 19. Son of George and Mary Jane Hoskin, of Moorview, Crafthole, St. Germans, Cornwall. Buried in FAUBOURG D'AMIENS CEMETERY, ARRAS, Pas de Calais, France. Plot VII. Row E. Grave 54.

Leading Stoker K/12437, H.M.S. Defence, Royal Navy. Died 31st May 1916. Aged 21. Son of Harry and Annie Ough, of Sheviock, St. Germans, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Plymouth, Devon. Panel 15.

probably Charles Henry Pearn, Private 05694, 20th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died 5th November 1919. Aged 32. Son of Robert and Edith Pearn, of Tregorrick, St. Austell, Cornwall; husband of Lillian Maud Pearn, of 16, Church St., St. Blazey, Cornwall. Buried in ABBEVILLE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot V. Row H. Grave 5.

Lieutenant 189237, Somerset Light Infantry. Died 30th October 1944. Aged 28. Son of Francis and Mary Bean; husband of Edith Marion Bean. of Hounsdown, Hampshire. Awarded the Military Cross (M.C.). Buried in ST MARY CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, SHEVIOCK, Cornwall.

Desmond [Charles]

Leading Writer D/MX 53515, H.M.S. Courageous, Royal Navy. Died 17th September 1939. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Plymouth, Devon. Panel 35, Column 1.

GARLAND

Antony

possibly Antony McDonald Garland, Lieutenant-Commander (A), H.M.S. Formidable, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 16th April 1945. Aged 34. Son of John William and Hilda Drake Garland, of Chigwell, Essex. No known grave. Commemorated on LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Bay 6, Panel 2.

HITT

William I

Private. He was an American soldier stationed locally during the run up to D Day. He was born probably 28th March 1923, died 29 July 1944, the son of Jesse T Hitt. On 16 April 1944 he married a local girl, Hilda Margaret Channings in the Church by the war memorial. By coincidence the bride was a niece of Alfred Callaghan who is also named on the memorial (see World War 1 section).

Petty Officer Sick Berth D/M 35888, H.M.S. Dorsetshire, Royal Navy. Died 5th April 1942. Aged 42. Son of Thomas William and Janet Paul; husband of Florence Gwendoline Paul, of Sheviock, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Plymouth, Devon. Panel 71, Column 2.

Their bodies are buried in peace but their name liveth for evermore
