ST. GERMOE WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is situated at the summit of Tregonning Hill, Germoe, Kerrier, Cornwall. The memorial is in the form of a rough hewn Celtic Cross on a three steooed base with inscriptions on the base is raised balck lettering. There are four names listed for World War 1 and three names for World War 2.

Private 24532, 7th Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry. Killed in action 16 August 1917. Aged 28. Born Kenneggie, enlisted Helston, resident Coppernon. Sapper 2006972, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Engineers. Died at Lakenham Military Hospital, Norwich, from Acute Rheumatism and Acute Anaemia 25 October 1918. Aged 27. Born 2 January 1891 in Germoe, Cornwall. Son of Mrs. Jane Rosetta Laity, of Newtown Cottage, Germoe, Marazion. Living in Globe Arizona, USA. Tunneller by trade. Unmarried. Attested and passed fit 7 January 1918 at North Vancouver, British Columbia, aged 27, height 5 feet 5¾ inches, girth 35½ inches, complexion dark, eyes brown, hair black, vision 20/20, hearing normal; religion Methodist. Aged 24. Born 8 May 1894 in England. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.). Resident Fresno, California, U.S.A. Self employed farmer. Medium height, medium build, brown eyes, black hair. Buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. Plot C, Row 46, Grave 3.

[Listed as William Courteny WHITE on memorial] Warrant Officer (Air Bomber) 1311804, 635 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Flying from Downham Market on night operations to Ottignies to bomb railway installations, flying in an Avro Lancaster III, serial number ND826, his aircraft crashed at Dion-le-Mont, ESE of Wavre, Belgium, 20 April 1944. Aged 34. Son of William Henry and Christian Jane White; husband of Gertrude May White, of West Croydon, Surrey. Buried in HEVERLEE WAR CEMETERY, Vlaams-Brabant, Belgium. Plot 2. Row G.
