The
St Ives war memorial is in the form of a Celtic Cross mounted on a tapering
shaft atop a tapering stone plinth with a three stepped base, surrounded
by railings, the names of the fallen are on to be found on plates affixed
to the base of the memorial. The memorial itself stands in the shadow
of the church tower, in Market Square. The name plates are hard to read.
There are 109 names listed fro World War 1 and 93 for World War 2. The
memorial was first decicated and unveiled 2 November 1922, the service
was attended by Lady Hain, then, when the inscription was changed to
include World War 2, the memorial was unveiled again 29 October 1950.
The memorial was originally designed by G Thurland Goosey, the architects
were Messrs. Cowell, Drewitt and Wheatkey, the sculptor was Mr Thomas,
of Nancledra, and the builder Henry Langford Richards. Therr are two
further stones nearby which commemorate a soldier from the Korena War
and one from the Afghanistan War.

of Cornwall's Light Infantry, only s. of Henry Baynham
Paull, of Methleigh, St. Ives, Cornwall, Land Agent, by his wife,
Catherine Ellen Shearme, dau. of the late William Hart Brimacombe,

Sir Harry Triscott Brooking, K.C.B., now (1918) Commanding 15th

Chard, V.C. (Rorke's Drift); b. Camborne, co. Cornwall,
21 July, 1889; educ. ,Kelly College, Tavistock, where he was a
member of the School Cadet Corps, and of the School team that
shot at Bisley; subsequently went to Sheffield, where he went,
through a course of Engineering in the works of Messrs. Vickers,
Son & Maxim, and at the Sheffield University, afterwards obtaining
an appointment as Engineer on a Rubber Plantation in the Malay
States, where he spent two and a quarter years, being then invalided
home with sunstroke and malaria. After spending some months at
home he accepted an appointment in the Land Valuation Department
of the Inland Revenue, intending ultimately to return to Malay;
but, war breaking out in the meantime, he enlisted in the A.S.C.,
M.T. (T.F.), in Sept. 1914 and was gazetted 2nd Lieut. Duke of
Cornwall's Light Infantry 7 Nov. 1915; served with the Expeditionary
Force in France and Flanders from 10 March, 1915, and died in
No. 38 Casualty Clearing Station, Dernancourt, 21 Aug. 1916, from
wounds received in action during the attack on Delville Wood on
the 18th. Buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, four miles south-west
of Dernancourt. His Colonel wrote : " He got down to hospital,
and I believe had his arm amputated and died after. He was quite.
cheery, and our doctor said he quite thought he would pull through.
It was a great blow to me, as he was a most useful officer,"
and a Captain in his battalion : I saw much of Paull, and he was
an officer wnose loss we can ill afford; we were good friends.
The casualties were terrible, and it is a depressing fact to realize
that I am the only Cornish officer left of five who were engaged
on the 18th." A brother officer also wrote : I was with Hal
almost to the last; He went across with two platoons; after a
rough passage, got into the German trench. I lost sight of hint
going across, but he got in soon after MC. it seemed as though
all our men had fallen, as we had a very little band around us.
He was hit after he had been in the enemy trench about half an
hour, I should say. I was about six yards from hint, and on turning
round to see what I could do for him, just walking forward, another
shell came nearly in the same place and knocked me out. . . .
He was always the best of fellows, such a good-hearted fellow,
and brave to the last." Unm.
