175th Company, Royal Engineers. Killed in action 1 October 1915
in Belgium. Aged 31. Resident St Just. Son of Richard and Wilmot
Thomas, of St. Just, Cornwall. In the 1891 census he was aged 6,
born Cornwall, a scholar, resident with his parents, Richard and
Wilmot Thomas, in Market Place, St Just, Penzance, Cornwall. In
the 1901 census he was aged 16, born St. Just, Cornwall, a Tin &
Copper Miner, resident with his parents, Richard and Wilmot Thomas,
at 18, Market Place, St Just, St Just in Penwith, Penzance, Cornwall.
Attended Camborne School of Mines 1903-1905. Buried in LARCH WOOD
(RAILWAY CUTTING) CEMETERY, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Ro

5445297, 4th Battalion, Duke of Corwall's Light Infantry. Died Sunday
20th December 1942 when apparently blown up with 2 or 3 others by
an exploding shell during exercises in the Pymouth area. Aged 22.
Son of Samuel James & Florence Chinner of St. Just, Cornwall,
one of tewlve children, brother of Richrad (below). His father Sam
had been in the Royal Navy in World War 1. Buried at Plymouth (Efford)
Cemetery Devon Section. C. Consecrated Grave 10388.
Edward
left a widow, Iris, at Efford, Plymouth, Devon.

PLY/X3617, HMS Galatea, Royal Marines. Died 15th December 1941 having
been in the Marines for only 6 weeks.. Aged 18. Son of Samuel James
& Florence Chinner of St. Just, Cornwall, one of twelve children,
brother of Edward (above). His father Sam had been in the Royal
Navy in World War 1. Commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.

HMS Galatea (15th Cruiser Squadron:Force B) was returning to Alexandria
in the Mediterranean when she was sunk by U557 with 2 torpedoes
- sank in 3 minutes - apparently witnessed by Richard's brother,
John, who was in the Royal Navy. 22 officers and 447 ratings killed
- 100 survivors. |
