ALLERDALE ST JOHNS WAR MEMORIAL

The AllerdalE St John memorial can be found on the right hand side of the path leading to the church. It takes the form of a simply unfashioned slate stone of remembrance with aN engraved inscription on the front face. The memorial was unveiled 1 November 1920. There are 10 names for World War 1 and 4 names for World War 2. Full details were published in the Cumbrian newspaper The Herald 6 November 1920. Within the church is a rectangular marble tablet with incised inscription and gold and stone tesserae around the border. It contains names of those who served in three columns, and the names of those who died in two columns (for World War 1 only). The World War 2 Roll of Honour is held in a wooden frame and contans three arches, the first and last contain names of those who served and the central arch contains the names of those who gave their lives.

ROBINSON Edwin
[Memorial states 21 Nov 1916. Aged 22] Private G/2697, 1/9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Died of wounds 20 November 1916. Aged 21. Born Keswick, enl;isted Gateshead-on-Tyne, resident Rowlands Gill, Durham. Son of Joseph and Jane Robinson, of Thirlmere, Cumberland. Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, Seine-Maritime, France. Section O. Plot II. Row F. Grave 2.
BRAGG John Moffat
Private 21472, 8th Battalion, Border Regiment. Died of wounds 7 July 1916. Aged 20. Born St John's Vale, Cumberland, enlisted Keswick, Cumberland. Son of Clement and Hannah Bragg, of Bridge House, St. John's Vale, Keswick, Cumberland. Buried in WARLOY-BAILLON COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot III. Row C. Grave 26.
STUART Thomas

Son of Susanna Handford, of Bungalow, St. John's Vale, Keswick, Cumberland, and the late William Handford. Buried in Cherat New Cemetery, India. Plot/Row/Section C. Grave 58.
