The
Alston war memorial is located in Penrith Road/Brampton Road, Alston.
It takes the form of a four stepped, Penrith red sandstone, base surmounted
by a square, Westmorland limestone, plinth and obelisk with the inscription
on the sides of the plinth;a laurel wreath is depicted at the base of
the obelisk. The memroial was made by Parkin & Son of Crosby Ravensworth
& Craig Brothers of Alston-Groundworks. The memorial was originally
unveiled 4 September 1922; attended by Earl of Lonsdale, Lord-Lieutenant
of Cumberland; dedicated 4 September 1922; attended by Rev. Harvey Rowse,
RN. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order within cofnlict;
there are 39 names for World War 1 and 12 names for World War 2.
