The
Broughton Moor memorial is located in St Columba's churchyard, Broughton
Moor. It takes the form of a cross with a wreath on the face mounted
on a plinth on a single-stepped base with a surround. It lists sixteen
names for World War 1 and ten for World War 2. It was built by Messrs.
Walker Brothers.

Westmorland and resident Ellenborough, Cumberland. No known grave. Commemorated on

Royal Naval Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Assumed killed
in action 4 June 1915. Aged 21. Son of Robert and Mary Bell, of
6, Granville Avenue, Annfield Plain, Co. Durham. In the 1901 census
there was a James Bell, stepbrother to Henry Towers (below),
aged 6, born Broughton Moor, son of Robert and Mary Bell, resident
Broughton Moor Standingstone, Broughton Moor, Cockermouth, Cumberland.
He was born 22 May 1894 in Broughton Moor, Cumberland. His family
were coal miners and with employment reducing there they moved to
the Stanley. Height 5 feet 8¼ inches, chest 36 inches, complexion
medium, light brown hair, eyes blue, religious denomination Methodist;
miner by trade. He could not swim. Entered the service 14 November
1914. Entitled to 1914-15 Star, Victory & British War Medals.
No known grave. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Turkey (including
Gallipoli). Panel 8 to 15. |

his death. In the 1901 census he is the stepson Robert Bell, son
of Mary Bell, aged 19, a Coalmine Hewer, born Workington, Cumberland,
resident Broughton Moor Standingstone, Broughton Moor, Cockermouth,
Cumberland. Half brother to James Bell (above).
No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face
