The war memorial is to be found outside the west wall of St John the Evangelist Church, Main Street, Cotehill, Carlisle, Cumbria. It takes the form of a Granite Latin Cross on a tapered plinth and base. There are 22 names for World War 1 listed in year order which have been sorted here into alphabetical order for ease of reading and research. There are 6 names for World War 2 also sorted into alphabetical order and one other name for a civilian killed during World War 2. The memorial was first unveiled 7 March 1920 by the Reverend R Botts, the vicar.

Driver T4/094275. 41st Division Train, Army Service Corps. Died of wounds 29th May 1917. Son of Joseph and Jane Milburn (former name unknown, marriage not proven). Husband of Annie Milburn (nee Graves). Born 1889 Cotehill, enlisted and resident Carlisle. Commemorated Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension (North). III. B. 187.
MOORE Joseph

Private 180486, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 15th November 1918. Appears Joseph Moore born 1889 Wetheral (as census), parentage unproven. Grandson of Joseph and Nancy Moore of Cotehill. Present Cotehill 1891/1901 and Constable (Great Northern Railway) London 1911. Joseph Moore moved from Cumberland and served as a police constable with the Great Northern Railway. He enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps on the 31st October 1918. He was posted for training at Rugeley but two days later was admitted to Cannock Chase Military Hospital. The reason for his admission is not recorded in his military records but he died there on the 15th November 1918. The cause of death was pneumonia and it is possible that this stemmed from influenza. His official length of service in the Machine Gun Corps was 16 days. He is buried in the south-west part of the churchyard of St Mary the Blessed Virgin, Warmington, Northamptonshire, which was the family home of his wife.

Lieutenant Colonel commanding 2nd Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers. Killed in action in in Italy 23 January 1944. Aged 43. Born Hertfordshire, resident Carlisle. Son of John MacInnes and of Ethel MacInnes (nee Dashwood); husband of Nancy MacInnes, of Armathwaite, Cumberland. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.). In the 1901 census he was newborn, born Shenley, Hertfordshire, son of John and Ethel J MacInnes, resident Watton Rectory, Watton At Stone, Hertford, Hertfordshire. In the 1921 census he was aged 20 years 11 months, unmarried, born Shenley, Hetfordshire, a Second Lieutenant, billetted at Headquarters, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Tullamore, King's Co, Ireland. "This officer commanded the right column of 17 Inf Bde's two columns advancing from GEORGE Beach on SYRACUSE on July 10.
He displayed great personal gallantry throughout the operation and it was chiefly through his determination, dash and personal leadership that his column made such remarkable progress throughout the day, capturing enemy post after post in rapid succession.
The capture of SYRACUSE on the day of landing was due in a large measure to this officer."
