The war memorial is to be found within St Peter’s Church, Kingstown, Carlisle, Cumbria. It takes the form of a brass plaque mounted on oak mounted on wall. The World War 1 names are listed by surname and initial only. The church building founded in 1931. The World War 1 names are also listed on the memorial at St John’s Church, Houghton.

Private S/21186, 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Killed in action 22nd August 1917. Aged 33. Husband of Edith Elizabeth Brown, of Kingstown. No known grave. Commemorated on at Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium panel 141 to 143 and 162. Thomas Brown listed as farmer at Kingstown in 1914.

Joseph

Corporal, 5th Reserve Battalion. Durham Light Infantry. Died in Hull Infirmary 22nd December 1917. Aged 25. Listed on gravestone in Houghton Churchyard. No known grave. Also commemorated on Carlisle Cemetery War Memorial 11 M 31.

Soldier’s Death.
Caused by Swallowing
False Teeth.

At an inquest at Hull on Joseph Birkett (24) of Carlisle, a Corporal in the Durham Light Infantry, it was stated what on December 9th, he swallowed his false teeth, in which there was a fault, about which he had complained but which could not immediately be repaired because the dentist he saw was full of work. Three operations were performed at the Royal Infirmary, and Birkitt died from haemorrhage. A verdict of accidental death was returned.
