LANGWATHBY WAR MEMORIAL

Detailed information for World War 1 & 2

The war memorial is to be found on the local green in Langwarthby and takes the form of a three-stepped base surmounted by a stepped plinth, cornice and obelisk. The inscriptions can be found on the sides of the plinth and on a separate tablet which lies gainst the steps to one side of the memorial. There are eleven names for World War 1 and 4 for World War 2.

HAXTON William
Guardsman/Private William Haxton, 25177, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards. Born in Abbey Town, Cumberland. Enlisted in Appleby. Killed in action in France and Flanders on 26th September 1916 aged 34 years. Remembered on Pier and Face 8D, Thiepval Memorial, France.
BATY John
Gunner John Baty, 116047, 162nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Born in Carlisle. Enlisted in Penrith, Cumberland. Killed in action in France and Flanders on 15th November 1916 aged 21 years. Buried in Couin British Cemetery, France. Grave Ref: VI.A.18. **Memorial states John Baty as being in the Coldstream Guards, but no evidence can be found of this.**
TOOTILL William

Private William Tootill, 260180, 8th Battalion, Border Regiment (formerly 315285, Westmorland and Cumberland Yeomanry). Born in Burnley, Lancashire. Resided in Burnley. Enlisted in Penrith, Cumberland. Son of Richard J. and Ellen Tootell of North Street Public Baths, Burnley, Lancashire. Killed in action in France and Flanders on 12th April 1918 aged 22 years. Remembered on Panel 6 of Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. **Listed on Memorial as Tootill, all available information refers to Tootell.**

Sapper Alfred Percy Cooper, WR/290232, 96th Light Railway Company, Royal Engineers. Born in Wigan, Lancashire. Resided in Long Preston, Yorkshire. Enlisted in Appleby, Westmorland. Son Henry Clarkson Cooper and Anne Cooper of Church Street, Long Preston, Yorkshire. Died in Egypt on 6th November 1918, aged 26 years. Buried in Damascus Commonwealth War Cemetery, Syria. Private George Little, 21491, 11th Battalion, Border Regiment. Born and resided in Langwathby, Cumberland. Enlisted in Appleby, Cumberland. Son of Tom and Elizabeth Little of Langwathby, Cumberland. Died of wounds in France and Flanders on 5th July 1916 aged 19 years. Buried in Puchevillers British Cemetery, France. Grave Ref: I.C.13.
BEWLEY Frederick
Private Frederick Bewley, S/6436, 2nd Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). Born in Langwathby, Cumberland. Enlisted in Dumfries. Son of Elias and Mary Bewley of Ivy Cottage, Langwathby, Carlisle. Died of wounds in the Persian Gulf on 14th March 1917 aged 23 years. Remembered on Shaikh Saad Old Cemetery Memorial in Amara War Cemetery, Iraq.
ALLAN William G
Private William George Allan, 278575, 1/7th Battalion, Princess Louise’s (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders). Resided in Longwathby, Cumberland. Enlisted in Clydebank, Dunbartonshire. Son of Richard and Martha Allan of Langwathby, Carlisle, Cumberland. Killed in action in France and Flanders on 23rd April 1917 aged 21 years. Buried in Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, France. Grave Ref: I.A.67.
DICKINSON William D
Private William Draper Dickinson, 205629, 7th Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) (formerly 204612, York and Lancaster Regiment). Born in Langwathby, Cumberland. Resided in Gargrave, Yorkshire. Enlisted in Keighley, Yorkshire. Killed in action in France and Flanders on 12th October 1917, aged 24 years. Remembered on Panel 106 to 108, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
SARGINSON Thomas W
Private Thomas William Sarginson, 34082, No. 4 Company, 10th (Shropshire and Cheshire Yeomanry) Battalion, King’s (Shropshire Light Infantry) (formerly 40807, Royal Engineers). Born in Dacre, Cumberland. Resided in Kirkoswald, Cumberland. Enlisted in Penrith. Son of Timothy Sarginson of Kirkoswald, Cumberland, and the late Elizabeth Sarginson; husband of Annie Scott (formerly Sarginson) of 18 Victory Avenue, Gretna, Dumfriesshire. Killed in action in Palestine on 30th November 1917 aged 32 years. Buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel. Grave Ref: E.46.
LITTLE James
Lance Corporal James Little, 19628, 1st Battalion, Border Regiment. Born in Clifton, Westmorland. Resided in Langwathby, Cumberland. Enlisted in Penrith, Cumberland. Died of wounds in France and Flanders on 16th April 1918 aged 25 years. Buried in Les Baraques Military Cemetery, Sangatte, France. Grave Ref: III.D.8. **Memorial lists 11th Battalion, but all available information refers to 1st Battalion.**
ALLAN Herbert
Private Herbert Allan, 2693640, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Garrison Regiment. Born on 27th September 1893 in Langwathby, Cumberland. Resided in Montreal, Quebec. Occupation: Grocery Clerk. Son of Richard Allan of Langwathby, Carlisle and the late Martha Allan. Died on 3rd November 1918. Buried in Montreal (Mount Royal) Cemetery, Canada. Grave Ref: Soldiers. S.C.G. 933/E. ** Commonwealth War Graves Commission list the Service Number as 2693649.**

Cadet Frederick Percival, 1247 Squadron, Air Training Corps. Son of Robert E. and Jane Percival of Langwathby, Cumberland. Died on 11th July 1942 aged 16 years. Remembered on Panel 287, Runnymede Memorial, Surrey.
GOODWIN H C M
Pilot Officer Harvey Carlisle Maxwell Goodwin, 108954, 6 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Son of Harvey Goodwin and Margaret Goodwin of Kirkby Thore, Westmorland. Died on 21st August 1942 aged 21 years. Buried in El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt. Grave Ref: III.C.14.
HALL Dixon
Private Dixon Hall, 14705880, 1/4th Battalion, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Died on 11th September 1944 aged 19 years. Buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France. Grave Ref: Divn. 67. Row G. Grave 10.
GOODWIN G A W
Lieutenant (A) George Archibald Wycliffe Goodwin MBE, H.M.S. Garuda, Royal Navy. Son of Harvey and Margaret Goodwin; husband of Betty Goodwin of Middleton-on-Sea, Sussex. Died on 16th November 1944 aged 34 years. Remembered on Bay 5, Panel 1, Lee-on-Solent Memorial, Hampshire. **The memorial quotes ‘Fleet Air Arm’ whereas the Commonwealth War Graves Commission quotes ‘Royal Navy’. The memorial states age at death as 27 years, but CWGC quote his age at death as 34 years.**
