MOOR ROW AND SCALEGILL WAR MEMORIAL

Detailed information for World War 1 & 2
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2023

The war memorial is to be found 50 yards before the junction with Dalzell Street and Scalegill Street, Moor Row, Copeland, Cumbria. It takes the form of a Celtic cross on top of a plinth and two stage base, all of Granite, in a hexagonal enclosure which has iron railings all round and a gate on the back face. The World War 2 memorial is a separate tablet at the base of the 9 o'clock face. For WW1 the names are on the two sides and the back face of the plinth. The memorial was made by Thomas Preston. It was first uneviled on 23 October 1921 by Mr. H. A. Bonney B. A. (Headmaster), Moor Row Primary School and unveiled for the addition of the World War 2 names by R.Q.M.S. J. K. Thomas, R.A.M.C., 14 November 1948. There are 42 names listed for World War 1 and 12 for World War 2. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research.

IN EVER GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE
MEN WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR
TRUTH AND RIGHT IN THE GREAT WAR
