- Saturday 21 August 1915, page 3:
HOW
A PENRITH SOLDIER DIED.
His widow has now received from two of his comrades some particulars
describing the death, already reported in the “Herald,”-
of Corpl. Jonathan Egglestone, son of Mrs. Egglestone, Southend-road,
Penrith. Corpl. Egglestone, who at the outbreak of war was engaged
in railway work at Carlisle, was in the 1st King's Regiment.
He was killed during a charge which his regiment made on 17th
July. Writing from France, Drummer Byrne says: “To teII
you the truth there is not a man in the Company saw him after
the night of the first attack, but we received information from
another Brigade that he had met hit death without pain, for
it was instantaneous. He is mourned by all that knew him, for
we could not have had a better N.C.O. He was brave and feared
nothing. We have nothing that belongs to him, for little did
we think we should have to part with a devoted friend at such
short notice. We were joking together just two hours before,
in the expectation of coming through safe and sound. Hoping
you do not fret too much, for he died a brave man."—Sergt.
J. Presland, of the same regiment, writes: "I am very sorry
I cannot give you any particulars as regards your husband's
death, only that he belonged to my section, and that when the
section got the order to advance we all went together to the
first German trench, and that was the last seen of your husband.
After the attack, which lasted four days, we had roll call,
and all our comrades were very sorry to hear about your husband,
as he was thought a lot of by everybody and respected by all.
I suppose the Commanding Officer would let you know as much
as possible about the charge, and the hard time we had, but
there is nothing that hurts as much as losing a pal. Perhaps
you will think it very funny of me writing like this, but it
is very hard to write to any person who has lost a dear one,
especially when you cannot let them know what they would very
dearly like to know."
