THE MEN WHOM
THIS MONUMENT
COMMEMORATES
WERE NUMBERED
AMONG THOSE WHO,
AT THE CALL OF
KING AND COUNTRY,
LEFT ALL THAT WAS
DEAR TO THEM,
ENDURED HARDNESS,
FACED DANGER,
AND FINALLY PASSED
OUT OF SIGHT OF MEN
BY THE PATH OF DUTY
AND SELF SACRIFICE,
GIVING UP THEIR OWN
LIVES
THAT OTHERS MIGHT
LIVE IN FREEDOM
LET THOSE WHO COME
AFTER SEE TO IT, THAT
THEIR NAMES
ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.

from The
Distinguished Service Order - Volume II - 1886-1915:
BEATTY,
CHARLES HAROLD LONGFIELD, Capt, was born 16 Jan. 1870,
eldest son of Capt. David Beatty, formerly in the 4th Hussars,
of Borodale, County Wexford, who for many years lived at The Moat,
Rugby. Capt. Beatty's other sons are Admiral Sir David Beatty,
G.C.B, K.C.V.O, D.S.O, C.C. The Grand Fleet ; Capt. Vandeleur
Beatty, who now trains at Newmarket, and Capt. George Beatty,
1st Lancers, Indian Army (died in India in 1915). Charles Beatty
was educated at Cheltenham, and at Trinity College, Stratford-on-Avon,
and joined the 6th Battn. of the Warwickshire Regiment. In 1892
he won his first steeplechase on a horse named Radical, owned
by Mr. Ralli, in the Dunmore Plate at Rugby. He won the Hunt Cup
at Warwick. In one afternoon at Towcester, in 1894, he won four
races, and was only beaten by a neck in a fifth. In 1895 Mr. Beatty
steered Kestrel to 'victory in the Grand Inter- national Steeplechase
at Sandown Park. In the same year he won several races with the
Nun, though he did not always ride the mare himself. In 1897 Mr.
Beatty was second in the Grand National on Filbert, and in the
following year he again had the mount of Filbert, and finished
fourth. In 1898 Capt. Beatty gave up riding races, and went to
Newmarket, where he superintended the training of horses owned
by the late Colonel McCalmont. Shortly afterwards he left with
his Regiment for South Africa, and served in the Boer War of 1899-1902.
He remained in South Africa for two years, serving in the Mounted
Infantry and on the Staff of General Alderson; operations in the
Transvaal in May and June, 1900; operations in Natal, March and
April, 1900 ; operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July
to 29 Nov. 1900, including actions at Frederickstad (17 to 25
Oct.); operations in Cape Colony, north of Orange River, including
action at Ruidam. He served with mounted Infantry ; operations
in the Transvaal 30 Nov. to Dec. 1901 ; operations in the Orange
River Colony, Jan. to March, 1902 ; operations in the Transvaal,
March to 31 May, 1902 (Queen's Medal with three clasps ; King's
Medal with two clasps). For his services in this campaign Capt.
Beatty was also twice mentioned in Despatches, and was created
a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette,
27 Sept. 1901] : "Charles Harold Longfield Beatty, Capt,
6th Royal Warwickshire Regiment. In recognition of services during
the operations in South Africa." He was invested by the King
29 Oct. 1901. In 1901 Capt. Beatty returned to Newmarket, and
in 1903, after the death of Colonel McCalmont, he took over the
lease of the Stables and began to train on his own account. Shortly
afterwards he took over the horses of Lord Howard de Walden. St.
Maclou, who won the Lincolnshire Handicap in 1902, and beat Sceptre
by a head, was trained by Capt. Beatty. In the same year St. Maclou
won a Biennial at, Newmarket. ; was beaten by a neck by Ballantrae,
in the Cambridgeshire, to whom he was giving 31 lbs, and won the
Manchester November Handicap. A year later he won the October
Plate at Kempton Park, and the Select Stakes at Newmarket. In
this same year, Zinfandel, also trained by Major Beatty, won five
out of the six races in which he took part. His single glorious
defeat was in the Cesarewitch, carrying 8 stones 4 lbs, and giving
Grey Tick, the winner, three years and 23 lbs. The five races
in which he came in first were the Manchester Cup, the Gold Vase
at Ascot, the Gordon Stakes at Goodwood, the Brighton Cup and
the Scarborough Stakes at Newmarket. In the following year Zinfandel
again won five out of the six races in which he ran, in the last
of which he took his revenge on Throw- away. As a five-year old
Zinfandel ran twice; was beaten by Pretty Polly in the Coronation
Cup, and won the Ascot Gold Cup. Capt. Beatty won he Jockey Club
Stakes with Rising Glass. Major Beatty served in the European
War from 1914-15, as A.D.C. to General Sir Edwin Alderson, while
commanding the Canadian Expeditionary Force ; was mentioned in
Despatches [London Gazette, June, 1915] ; while serving with Mounted
Infantry was severely wounded at St. Eloi, April, 1916 (left,
arm amputated), and died of wounds 17 May, 1917. Major Beatty
was buried at Atherstone with full military honours. The band
of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, to which Major Beatty was
attached, attended. Among the mourners were the widow and Major
Vandeleur Beatty. Admiral Sir David Beatty was unable to be present.
A memorial service was held at St. Agnes's Church, Newmarket,
at the same time as the funeral at Atherstone. The Rev. —
Colvil-Wallis, Rural Dean, officiated, and a number of racing
folk were present. Capt. Beatty married, in 1905, Lucy Alice,
eldest daughter of the late Edward Beck, Esq, of Gippsland, Victoria,
widow of J. S. Langlands, Major, 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry,
and there is one son, Charles Robert Longfield, born 24 Oct. 1910.

Extract
from Essex Newsman - Friday 28 January 1944, page 3:
His
many friends and in Maldon and District will be sorry to hear
that the Rev. Alfred Sadd, B.A., is reported missing, believed
killed.
A
few weeks ago we heard that the Americans had reached the Gilbert
Islands in the Central Pacific. We hoped their occupation would
bring good news of Mr. Sadd. For ten years he had been in charge
of the London Missionary Society's post on Beru, an island in
the Gilbert Group.
He
was last heard of in April, 1942, when, in reply to a radio message
from the Colonial Office asking if he was all right, he radioed
back: "Many thanks."
He
was 35 this year. He taught 200 Gilbertese boys and girls at the
only school on Beru. The island is a coral reef, eight miles by
eight and a half. Its highest Point is only some eight feet above
sea level.
All the missionaries were able to escape before the Japanese got
there in December, 1941. But Mr Sadd he would not leave the people
he loves under any circumstances.
Mr. Sadd's relatives at Maldon — many of whom are connected
with John Sadd and Sons—will not believe Alfred is dead.
They still expect to hear from him.
