The Wotton Under Edge war memorial is located at the crossroads in the
centre of the town. It takes the form of a square, tapered, column set
on a square base with pediments constructed from dressed Portland stone;
an urn sits on top of column; the memorial has a set of three steps,
with an inscription and names on bronze plaques set into square base
with a separate bronze plaque added to commemorate those who fell in
World War 2. There are 114 names listed for World War 1 and 15 for World
War 2. The war memorial was erected after the end of the First World
War, to a design by Percy Burnell Tubbs, RIBA, whose son, Captain S
B Tubbs, is one of the men who lost their lives in the First World War
that is commemorated on the memorial. It was carved by Henry Poole,
RA (1873-1928), and was unveiled in a civic ceremony on 20 June 1920.
A bronze plaque commemorating the men of the town who died in the Second
World War was added after 1945.

THE
ROLL OF HONOUR.
Major Henry Sullivan Becher, the 2nd Gurkhas, who was nephew of
Mrs Bruce, Crawford square, Londonderry, who was killed in Flanders
on November 2, was thirty-eight years of age, received his first
appointment in January, 1896. In the following year he took part
in the operations on the Samana, on the North Western Frontier
of India, receiving the medal with two clasps. He also saw active
service in the Tirah campaign of 1897-8, being present at the
actions Chagru Kotal and Dargai, the capture of the Sampagha and
Arhanga Passes, and the operations in the Waran and Bara Valleys.
For his part in these and other operations he received a third
clasp, and a fourth was added for further service on the North
West Frontier in 1901-2. Major Berber became captain in January,
1905, A.D.C. to the Commander in-Chief in the East Indies in November,
1909, and major in January last. He was the only son of the late
Sullivan Becher and of, Mrs. Becher, of Kings wood House, Wotton
under Edge, Gloucestershire. One who knew him well sends us the
following tribute: “Sullivan Becher’s was widely known
and universally beloved. He lived for, and has died, as he would
have wished, leading the gallant Gurkhas of the regiment which
his father, Colonel Sullivan Becher, raised in 1884. Major Becher
was for several years A.D.C. to the late Commander in Chief in
India, and only left that appointment to take part in 1912 in
the expedition against the Abors with his regiment. In this short
but arduous campaign he was mentioned in despatches, and was one
of the few British officers in the casualty list, being struck
on the head by a boulder hurled from above by the enemy defending
a narrow pass. He excelled at every kind of sport, forming one
of the polo team of his regiment when last year the 2nd Gurkhas
won the Infantry Polo Cup for all India.”

WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE
SOLDIER
KILLED IN ACTION.
We regret to record the news that Mr R. F. Fry (Reggie), the eldest
son of Mr and Mrs F. W. Fry, of Holywell Lodge, Wotton-under-Edge,
has been killed in action. He joined the 1st Infantry Brigade,
Canada, and came to England in the early summer last year, and
after being in France for some months, was wounded in April by
a bullet which passed through his right arm. After being in the
London and County Hospital for some weeks, he returned to France,
and has since been killed in action. He was educated at the K.L.B.
Grammar School, Wotton under Edge, under the Rev. F. W. Morris,
M.A., head-master, who, after resigning, was appointed rector
of Harnhill, Cirencester. Mr Fry won a scholarship at the school,
and passed the Oxford examination with honours; in addition he
was the recipient of many certificates and prizes. On leaving
school he served three years with the National and Provincial
Bank, at Hanley, Staffs.; but clerical work not suiting him, he,
like his brother (Mr Leonard N. Fry, who is a lieutenant in the
R.N.), having a love for the sea and travel, went to the West
Indies, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, and the
Rocky Mountains, Canada, and other parts of the world. He was
the first of the old hoys of the Grammar School to be wounded
and the first killed action. His parents have received very many
letters and expressions of sympathy.

VALE CLEANINGS.
The
gazetting of Mr. Harold Oakhill, of Wotton-under-Edge, to the
Royal Field Artillery, has been greeted with much satisfaction
in his native town, the residents of which have followed with
great interest his rapid rise from the ranks since joining the
Army. His most noteworthy exploit was, of course, the capture,
single-handed, of 47 Germans, for which smart piece of work he
was awarded the Distinguished Conduct. Medal. He has also been
twicc mentioned in despatches, his capabilities also gaining for
him well-merited promotions, until he attained the rank of sergeant.
After serving close upon two years in France he was recommended
for a commission in the same branch of the Service in which he
had distinguished himself. Another Wotton-undcr-Edge soldier to
receive a commission is Sergt. Fred Jotcham, youngest of the three
soldier sons of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jotcham. of Haw-street.

he was captain of the school XI. for three seasons, the last which
yielded him batting average of 79. He was also captain of the

BERKELEY
VALE GLEANINGS.
The
Wotton-under-Edge district has had many grievous losses since
the war, but none will seem more crushing than that of Capt. Seymour
Burnell Tubbs, second son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy B. Tnbbs, of 2
Moore-street, Cadogan-square, London, and nephew of Mr. S. W.
Tubbs, J.P., of Ellerncroft, Wotton-under-Edge, who was killed
by a shell in action in France as was in the act of cheering on
his men. A letter from one of his men states that the company
has lost a gentleman and brave officer, and his death has caused
them profound grief. The deceased officer, who was about 24 years
of age, came to the Wotton district in 1912, when he joined the
firm of Messrs. Tubbs, Lewis, and Co.. Kingswood. A young man
of great personal charm, singleness of purpose, and sweetness
of nature, coupled with a keen sense of humour, he soon became
very popular in the district, and regret is general at the sudden
termination to what would have been a most useful life. The late
Captain Tubbs took a great interest in all forms of manly sport,
and in peace days was the captain of the Wotton-under-Edge Cricket
Club. He was very fine batsman, and gave many dashing displays
with the willow which will not soon be forgotten by those who
had the privilege of witnessing them.

CAPT.
S. B. TUBBS.
Captain
Seymour Burnell Tubbs, Gloucestershire Regiment (killed instantaneously
by a shell while leading his company into action on August 22)
was the secoud son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy B. Tubbs, and was bom
in 1893. He was educated at St. Cyprian's School, Eastbourne,
and Harrow, where he distinguished himself at fives (playing for
the school) and at cricket. He enlisted at the outbreak of war,
and received his commission about a month later, became captain,
and went out France with his battalion in May, 1916. He fought
on the Somme in the autumn, and was invalided home with trench
fever, after being recommended for the M.C. Returning to duty
in May of this year, he was acting adjutant for some months. The
officer second in command of his battalion writes: "He was
loved by all, both officers and men, aud we have never had in
this battalion since it was formed a more popular, sounder, or
more cheerful officer than he was. He was given a new company
to form less than six weeks ago, and it is already acknoledged
by all to be quite the best in the battalion, which says a great
deal for his powers of leader ship and control of men. . . . His
company did wonderfully good work, as did the rest his regiment."

The already formidable "Roll of Honour" for Wotton-under-Edge—a
parish which did splendidly in sending voluntary soldiers and
sailors to the Services—now contains another name—Pte.
Alfred Elliott, of the Gloucestershire Regiment, who was killed
in the trenches on July 8. The same shell which was responsible
for his death also accounted for an officer, a sergeant, and four
other men. He was the son of Mr. Alfred Elliott, of Wotton-under-Edge,
and was only 19. Pte. William Robert Holborow, late Scots Gerys,
attached to the Gordon Highlanders, fell on July 1. He was the
son the late Mr. Daniel Holborow, and of Mrs. Holborow, of Tresham,
Wotton-under-Edge, and was only 21. News has also been received
that Lce.- Corpl. George Gingell. of the R.F.A., son Mr. and Mrs.
John Gingell, of Hawkesbury Upton, and Lce.-Corpl. Victor Trayburn,
of the Royal Sussex (Pioneers), who was for years employed, as
compositor at the "Gazette" office, Dursley, have also
made the great sacrifice. The latter, a young man, who was very
popular with all who knew him, was "turned down" twice
before being accepted for the Army in the early days of the war.
A wide circle of friends will mourn the death of Sec.-Lieut. Cedric
Donovan Upstone, only son of the late Rev. Philip Upstone, formerly
curate Wotton-under-Edge, and afterwards vicar of Coaley, near
Dursley. The gallant officer was 23 years of age and belonged
to the Devons. He was serving in Mesopotamia when he was attacked
by a fever, and passed away in a war hospital at Colaba, India.
He spent his boyhood in Wotton-under-Edge, and news of his untimely
end has aroused the greatest sympathy for his widowed mother.
