BRETTELL,
DFC |
Edward
Gordon |
Flight
Lieutenant (PIlot) 61053, 133 (Eagle) Squadron, Royal Air Force
Volunteer Reserve. Died 29th March 1944. Aged 29. Son of Vivian
Brettell and of Eileen Isabella Brettell, of Farnham, Surrey. B.A.
(Cantab.). Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.). Buried
in POZNAN OLD GARRISON CEMETERY, Poland. Collective grave 9. A.
Note:
Flight Lieutenant Edward Gordon Brettell DFC (61053) was just
one of many RAF pilots to undergo training at Hatfield. However,
his is not an ordinary story. The Cambridge graduate and racing
driver answered his country's call to duty. Shot down and captured
in one of the few instances where an entire fighter squadron was
lost on a single mission (mainly due to a then unknown weather
phenomenon), he played an important role in The Great Escape.
An event in WWII made famous by the book and film – even
if the dramatic licence of the film version has led to the real
story being overshadowed. A story that directly involved Churchill,
Hitler and future prime minister Anthony Eden but most of all
the indomitable human spirit. People, from many nations, working
together to defeat a common evil. Sadly, it also led to the murder
of 50 Allied air force officers – Gordon Brettell was one
of them. Read more about Edward
Brettell....
