SHEET WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information

The Sheet war memorial is to be found in the grounds of St Mary Magdalen Chruch, Farnham Road, Sheet. It takes the form of a rough hewn, Latin Cross standing on a square plinth and base; the World War 1 names and inscription are inscribed on plaques on the sides of the plinth and those for World War 2 on an additional sloping plaque fixed to the front base. There are 20 names listed for World War 1 and 6 for World War 2. The memorial was first unveiled on 18th November 1920.

Captain, 3rd Battalion, attached 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916. Born 24 May 1869. Resident Adhurst St Mary, Peterfield, Hampshire. Half-brother of Francis H. (1872) and John (1870). (Burke, L.G.; The Times, 11 July 1916.) Educated Winchester School. Matriculated Trinity College, Cambridge University Michelmas 1887 in Mathematics; B.A. 1890. 1st Puisne Judge at Mombasa. Served as a Lieutenant in the Volunteer Company, Royal Hampshire Regiment, during the South African (Boer) War 1899-1902; awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with 3 clasps for Cape Coploby, Orange Free State and Transvaal. In the Great War with the South African Defence Force and then Captain, Hampshire Regiment. Also commemorated on a headstone in St Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Buriton, Hampshire. Buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 2, Somme, France. Plot XVI. Row D. Grave 13.

Gunner RMA/9679 (R.F.R. Immed. Class 14), H.M.S. "Good Hope", Royal Marine Artillery. Lost in action off Coronel, on the coast of Chile, 1 November 1914. Born 3 August 1883 in Redford, Sussex. Husband of Jessie Bullock, of Haselbank Cottage, Street, Petersfield, Hampshire. Farm labourer prior to enlistment. Enlisted 14 August 1901 at Eastney, Berkshire, Naval Reserve 21 October 1908, recalled 13 July 1914. Religious denomination Church of England. Height 5 feet 10¾ inches, fresh complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes. No known grave. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire. Panel 5.

Aged 11, born Langrish, Hampshire, resident with his parents, Joseph and Harriett Cranstone, at Reservoir Cottages, 6, Sheet, Petersfield, Hampshire; brother of Lewis (below). In the 1911 census he was. Aged 31, born Langrish, Hampshire, a Domestic Gardener, resident with his parents, Joseph and Harriett Cranstone, in Sheet, Petersfield, Hampshire. Fisher, C.B., late 2nd King Edward's Own Gurkha Rifles (The Sirmoor Rifles) of "Sirmoor," Short Heath, Farnham, Surrey, and the late Mrs. Fisher (nee Haig). Educated at Cheltenham College, England.
