The
memorial is to be found on a small green at the Huntingdon end of the
borough and takes the form of a classical cross made from Stancliffe
stone mounted on a massive plinth with a three-stepped base; each of
the points of the cross has been enriched with a fleur-de-lys. There
are 77 names for World War 1 and 13 for World War 2.
The memorial was unveiled on 1st January 1921 by Major-General Pilcher
and re-dedicated in 1947 when the World War 2 names were added. The
architect was Mr Alfred B Yates; the monies were raised by public subscription.

From
Huntingdonshire Heroes of the First World War by John Bell

Sergeant William A Shaw.
Number
11 Platoon,
"C" Company,
France.
23rd. July 1915.
Dear
Mrs. Britton,
I
very much regret to have to tell you that your son 7611 Private
George Britten was killed on the night of the 16th July.
He
was at the time engaged in a dangerous work in front of the enemies'
lines. He was killed instantly and could not possibly have suffered
any pain. He was buried behind our lines and a cross has been
erected in his memory.
He
will be greatly missed by all his comrades who thought a great
deal of him. He was a good soldier and always did his duty without
fail. He was bright and cheerful at all times and always ready
to help any of his comrades.
As
a soldier I cannot praise his work too much and no one can feel
his loss more than I do. One great consolation is that he died
a hero doing his country's work.
Although
it is hard to lose such a fine soldier it is comforting to think
that he was doing his duty faithfully when he met his death.
The
whole of his comrades wish me to extend their deepest sympathy
to you in his loss.
Believe
me to be yours faithfully,
William
A Shaw
Sergeant.
