MONKS HORTON WAR MEMORIAL

Both memorials are to be found in the parish church of St Peter's, Monks Horton.

At the base of the stained glass window commemorating the fallen is the following dedication -

“Five men of this parish who gave their lives for God, King and Country in the Great War 1914 to 1918, this window was erected in gratitude by the people of Monks Horton 1920. Grant them O Lord eternal rest and may light perpetual shine upon them”.

1914 -1919

ANDREWS

William Samuel

Private G11204, 1st Battalion, Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment). Died 13th August 1916 aged 29 years. Born Norwich. Enlisted St Pau1s Churchyard, London. Resided Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Son of William and Elizabeth Andrews. Buried Tunbridge Wells Cemetery, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

ANDREWS

George Thomas

Private 55728, 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Formerly (37521) Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Died 26th August 1918. Born Brabourne, Kent. Enlisted Canterbury. Commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel reference 6.

ARMITAGE

Robert John

Corporal 438932, 75th Battalion, (Central Ontario Regiment) Canadian Infantry. Died 30th September 1918. Born North Onslow, Quebec, Canada 9th April 1887. Enlisted Dryden, Canada 28th December 1914. Husband of Alice Charlotte Armitage of Monks Horton, Stowting, Ashford, Kent. Buried Cantimpre Canadian Cemetery, Sailly, Nord, France. Grave reference B.4.

HOWLAND

William

Private G/4361, 6th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 13th October 1915 aged 18 years. Born and resided Monks Horton. Enlisted Hythe, Kent. Son of George and Jane Howland of “Sunnyside,” Hythe, Kent.. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Also commemorated on the Lympne village war memorial, Hythe town war memorial and St Leonards School (Hythe) memorial plaque.

RENDALL

Frank

Corporal G/514, 7th Battalion, The Buffs, (East Kent Regiment). Died 18th November 1916 aged 32 years. Born Maiden Newton, Dorset. Son of Dr William and Anna Maria Rendall of The Limes, Kemble, Gloustershire. Buried Stump Road Cemetery, Grandcourt, Somme, France. Grave reference B.26.

KILLED IN ACTION 1939-45 WAR

FAGG

Thomas Arthur

Boy 1st Class C/JX 162644 FAGG. Royal Navy. H.M.S. “Kelly.” Died 23rd May 1941 aged 17 years. Son of Thomas William and Winifred Jessie Fagg of Monks Horton, Kent. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Chatham, Kent. Panel reference 45.2.

H.M.S. Kelly was sunk by German aircraft off Crete with a loss of 130 lives. One of the survivors was the Captain, Lord Louis Mountbatten who was many years later murdered by terrorists (P.I.R.A) at Sligo Bay, Eire.

NYE

Clifford Anthony

Private 6353982, 6th Battalion, South Wales Borderers. Formerly Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry (O&B.LI). Died 5th August 1944 aged 21 years. Buried Taukkyan War Cemetery, Myanmar, (formerly Burma). Grave reference 6.G.4.

The memorial commemorates Clifford as belonging to the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry at the time of death.
