BARDNEY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located at the junction of Horncastle Road and Silver Street, bardney. It takes the form of an Aberdeen Granite base surmounted by a double plinth, tapering shaft and cross. The inscriptions are in white lettering on the plinth. The memorial is enclosed by low, wrought iron, railings. The full names appear on the memorial for both World War 1 and 2. A secondary list of 125 names appears for those who served in World War 1 listed by surname and initials. The memorial was uneviled and dedicated on 19th January 1920, Col. Heneage unveiled the memorial and it was dedicated by local clergymen and dignitaries. The memorial cost about $350 originally and was designed by Charles E Marks, built by Boulton's of Lincoln. originally the village pump sat on the site of the memorial.

Sergeant 645577, 196 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died 30th March 1943. Aged 22. Son of William Henry and Fanny Andrew; husband of Muriel Andrew, of Bardney, Lincolnshire. No known grave. Commemorated on RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey. Panel 140.

Note: No. 196 Squadron was formed at Driffield, Yorkshire, on 7th November 1942, as a night-bomber squadron and during the period February - October 1943, made many raids on enemy ports and industrial centres in Europe and also played an active part in Gardening (minelaying).

It flew Wellingtons with No. 4 Group at first and then, after having left Yorkshire and moved south to an airfield in Cambridgeshire, flew Stirlings with No. 3 Group. On 1st December, by which time it was based in Leicestershire, No. 196 was transferred from Bomber Command to the Allied Expeditionary Air Force (AEAF).

In February 1944 the supply-dropping to resistance forces in France began and on D-Day twenty-three of the squadron's Stirlings carried troops to Normandy, followed later in the day by seventeen towing Gliders. In September 1944, the squadron took part in the Arnhem landings and in February 1945, began tactical bombing raids in support of the Army. In March thirty aircraft were supplied for the Rhine crossing and fuel was carried to keep the advancing armies supplied. In May, troops were taken to Norway and Denmark to disarm the German forces there, being followed by general transport duties. On 16 March 1946, the squadron was disbanded.
