LUFORD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located in the grounds of Ludford Magna parish church. It is in the form of a Celtic Cross mounted on a column which is in turn mounted on plinth; the whole monument is supported by a single stepped base. Inscriptions are on the base of the column and the plinth. There are 12 names for World War 1 only. The memorial was unveiled and dedicated 19th June 1920; details can be found in the Lincoln Chronicle 26th June 1920..

Private 23054. 3rd Battalion, Northamptonshire Regiment. Died at home 19th March 1916, aged 27 years. Son of George and Mary Briggs, brother of John Briggs. Born Ludford, Lincs and enlisted Raunds, Northants. Commemorated LUDFORD (St Mary) CHURCHYARD.

BRIGGS

Private 50635. 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 31st July 1917 on his 23rd birthday. Son of George and Mary Briggs of 5 Eastfield Road, Louth, Lincs. Brother of Charles Briggs. Born Ludford, enlisted Horncastle and resident Ludford, Lincs. Commemorated YPRES (Menin Gate) MEMORIAL. Panel 39 and 41. Also on headstone of Charles Briggs in LUDFORD (St Mary) CHURCHYARD.

Private 63022. 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 20th November 1917, aged 39 years. Son of William and Jane Eliza Brown of Ludford, Lincs. Born Ludford, enlisted Market Rasen and resident Lincoln, Lincs. Commemorated LA CHAUDIERE MILITARY CEMETERY, Vimy. X.G.2.

Private 242187. 5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26th September 1917, aged 19 years. Son of George and Mildred Brumpton of North Elkington, Lincs. Enlisted Market Rasen and resident Ludford, Lincs. Commemorated TYNE COT MEMORIAL. Panel 35 to 37 and 162 to 162A.
