Our
parishioners have provided and placed a churchyard cross of Clipsham
Stone in the churchyard of the parish church of Welbourn, that the
said cross to be about thirteen feet six inches in height and about
eight feet square at the base and has been placed outside the South
Porch of the parish church of Welbourn on the west side of the gate
there. That the said cross bears the following inscription:
“1914
– 1918 This cross is erected to the Glory of God and in undying
memory of (here follows eleven names) who fell in the service of their
King and Country in the Great War”
That
the said cross has been erected according to the design and superintendence
of Mr. W. Samuel Weatherby of 13 Buckingham St, London, W6.

of War Memorial
The
picturesque little churchyard of Welbourn, 22 miles southeast of Lincoln,
was the scene on Sunday afternoon of am impressive and inspiring ceremony.
All Welbourn gathered at the church to pay homage to their gallant
sons, whose glorious sacrifices during the war have been commemorated
by the erection of a beautiful war memorial, which was formerly dedicated
by the Bishop of Lincoln (Dr. Swayne) and unveiled by Sir William
Robertson.
The handsome memorial, which is a stone cross some 14 feet high, standing
on a triple base pedestal, was designed by Mr. Weatherby of London,
and executed by Mr. Porter, Sculptor of Fulbeck. The wording on the
memorial reads:

Note:
In January 1942 the squadron moved to East Anglia, where a maintenance
base was set up at Bircham Newton, though from February all operations
were flown from St.Eval in Cornwall. No.502 pionneered the use of
air-to-surface radar and had, on 30 November 1941, made the first
successful attack on a U-boat by a Coastal Command aircraft using
ASV, when U-206 was sunk in the Bay of Biscay. |
