WELBOURN ST CHAD WAR MEMORIAL

Our parishioners have provided and placed a churchyard cross of Clipsham Stone in the churchyard of the parish church of Welbourn, that the said cross to be about thirteen feet six inches in height and about eight feet square at the base and has been placed outside the South Porch of the parish church of Welbourn on the west side of the gate there. That the said cross bears the following inscription:

“1914 – 1918 This cross is erected to the Glory of God and in undying memory of (here follows eleven names) who fell in the service of their King and Country in the Great War”

That the said cross has been erected according to the design and superintendence of Mr. W. Samuel Weatherby of 13 Buckingham St, London, W6.

Dedication of War Memorial

The picturesque little churchyard of Welbourn, 22 miles southeast of Lincoln, was the scene on Sunday afternoon of am impressive and inspiring ceremony. All Welbourn gathered at the church to pay homage to their gallant sons, whose glorious sacrifices during the war have been commemorated by the erection of a beautiful war memorial, which was formerly dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln (Dr. Swayne) and unveiled by Sir William Robertson.

The handsome memorial, which is a stone cross some 14 feet high, standing on a triple base pedestal, was designed by Mr. Weatherby of London, and executed by Mr. Porter, Sculptor of Fulbeck. The wording on the memorial reads:

Son of George and Charlotte Pickering, of Welbourn, Lincoln. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 35 and 37.

Private 201886, 4th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (Central Ontario Regiment). Died 10th April 1917. Aged 27. Born 15th July 1891 in Welbourn Village. Son of Joseph and Mary Preston, of Welbourn Village; husband of Clara E. Slattery West (formerly Preston), of 5, McRoberts Avenue, Toronto, Ontario. Driver by trade. Unmarried when he enlisted and was passed fit on 1st November 1815 at Toronto, Canada, aged 24 years 4 months, height 5 feet 7½ inches, girth 37 inches, complexion fresh, eyes brown, hair brown; religion Church of England. No known grave. Commemorated on VIMY MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. National Archives of Canada Accession Reference: RG 150, Accession 1992-93/166, Box 7965 - 16

Second Lieutenant, 5th Battalion (Territorial), Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 21st July 1916. Aged 21. Son of the Rev. J. S. Puckridge and Mrs. Puckridge, of Welbourn Rectory, Lincoln. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 5 A and 5 B.

[Listed as 9th Battalion on memorial] Private 21661, 8th Battalion, Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry). Killed in action 28th April 1917. Born Collingham, enlisted Salsibury, resident Templecombe, Somerset. Commemorated on special memorial E 7 in CHILI TRENCH CEMETERY, GAVRELLE, Pas de Calais, France.

Note: The cemetery contains 196 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 19 of the burials are unidentified and 86 graves destroyed by shell fire are now represented by special memorials.

Able Seaman D/JX 187558, H.M.S. President III, Royal Navy. Died 25th March 1942. Aged 21. Son of George and Clara Harvey, of Welbourn. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 65, Column 2.

WILBERFORCE

Noel Alfred Gratian

Pilot Officer 120707, 502 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (flying Whitleys). Died 10th October 1942. Aged 29. Son of Tennyson Wilberforce and of Mabel Wilberforce (nee Woods); husband of Enid Gwyneth Wilberforce, of Welbourn. No known grave. Commemorated on RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL, Surrey. Panel 72.

Note: In January 1942 the squadron moved to East Anglia, where a maintenance base was set up at Bircham Newton, though from February all operations were flown from St.Eval in Cornwall. No.502 pionneered the use of air-to-surface radar and had, on 30 November 1941, made the first successful attack on a U-boat by a Coastal Command aircraft using ASV, when U-206 was sunk in the Bay of Biscay.
