Extract from Wisbech Standard 1916: AWARDS
FOR BRAVERY. A stirring account of how a Walsoken soldier gained the Military Medal was given to our representative by a comrade, Pte. L. Fennilow, of Leverington, who is home on ten days' leave from the front. The brave soldier is Corpl. Robert Ernest Rawling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rawling, of Ramnoth-road, Walsoken, whose three sons are all in the Army. Fred is in the Life Guards, Tom is in the Cambridgeshire Territorials, but attached to the Norfolks in France, while the one mentioned above is in the Machine Gun Corps. Mrs. Rawling had received a letter from her son to say he had won the Military Medal. Pte. Fennilow stated that he was in the same trench as Corporal Rawling in the big attack on Saturday, Oct. 14th, when the Cambridge Territorials made their name at the Schwaken Redoubt, their machine gun corps moving up with them. On the Sunday morning, he continued, "All our guns had been put out of action by the Germans with the exception of Corpl. Rawings'. The Germans attacked, but the Corporal with his gun succeeded in repulsing them on his own, and succeeded in driving them back. All our officers had been wounded, but one of the Cambridgeshire officers took us in charge, and lie recommended Rawlings for his gallantry. A day or two afterwards we were relieved, and Corpl. Rawlings went away, returning wearing the Military Medal. We were all proud of his success." It is a singular coincidence that Corpl. Rawling and Pte. Fennilow enlisted together on Sept. 4th, 1914, in the Cambs. Territorials, and went out to France together 21 months ago with the Machine Gun Section of the Cambs. Territorials, but were afterwards transferred to the Machine Gun Corps. They were the only two men from Wisbech district in their company. Before enlisting Corpl. Rawling was a goods clerk in the employ of the Great Eastern Railway Company. |
