BEST Alexander Archie Dunlop

Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders. Killed in an attack on a train near Naboom Spruit 4 July 901. Aged 22. Born May 1879. Son of A.V. Dunlop Best. Educated at Haileybury, Hertfordshire. Also commemorated on Old Boys Cloisters Tablet, Haileybury College, Hailey, Hertfordshire, and Old Boys Memorial, Lupton's Chantry, Eton College Chapel, Eton, Berkshire.

Extract from The Last Post - Roll of Officers who fell in South Africa 1899-1902 by Mildred G Dooner, published by Naval and Military Press:

Best.—Lieut. Alexander Archie Dunlop Best, Gordon Highlanders, was killed in action in an attack on a train four miles north of Naboom Spruit, July 4th, 1901. He was the only son of A. V. Dunlop Best, Esq., was born in May, 1879, and educated at Haileybury and Eton (Mr. Radcliffe's). He entered the Gordon Highlanders in April, 1899, being promoted lieut. in the following Oct. He had served from the commencement of the war. The party which he commanded was escort to a train travelling from Pretoria to Pietersburg, which was wrecked and all in it were killed or wounded.

Bradbury.—Lieut. Lewis Balfour Bradbury, 2nd Batt. Gordon Highlanders, died on Oct. 22nd, 1899, of wounds received in action at the battle of Elandslaagte on the previous day. He was the only son of the late J. L. Bradbury, Esq., Bengal Civil Service, and Mrs. Bradbury, of 7, West Maitland Street, Edinburgh. Lieut. Bradbury was born in Nov., 1877, educated at Edinburgh Academy, and entered the Gordon Highlanders from the Royal Military College, from which he passed with honours, in Feb., 1897, being promoted lieut. April, 1899. He was a well-known athlete, a first-rate football player, and a good runner, both at one hundred yards and the quarter mile. At school he was first at these distances for three years in succession, and at Sandhurst and the Army Athletic Meeting he was a well-known successful competitor. After serving in India for about one year, he went with his battalion to South Africa, in Sept., 1899, and proceeded to Ladysmith. At Elandslaagte he was mortally wounded while rushing forward and leading some men of his company to attack the Boer position.
